AVOID THE RESTAURANT!!!
Can not comment on the hotel but the restaurant is one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had! We thought we had a great place to sit, eat and watch the great Key West sunset. Well, we sat and did get to watch the sunset.
Once the sun was down and we were contemplating our 3rd round of drinks we began to wonder just where our food was. It was difficult to catch our waitress as she was the only person servicing about 20 tables. An hour after our order was placed one of our friends went looking for our waitress and found the manager. She asked what the problem was and when told she informed him that was impossible because "all food comes out within ten minutes". Never did she say "Let me check on it for you" or anything like that. She was later also extremly rude to my wife, even putting her hands up in her face and telling her that "they never take that long to serve food."
It is in a great location. One can only hope that someone else takes the place over. As for now just keep walking down Mallory Square and find someplace civil to eat.

Watching the sunset

Key West offers unobstructed views of a beautiful, romantic sunset. The best place to watch the sunset is Mallory Square, located near the northwest corner of the island. This is where the Sunset Celebration is held each night. There are plenty of benches as well as outdoor dining spots to watch the sun go down into the ocean.

Key West is known for it’s beautiful sunsets. Unfortunately, we were still about a 25 min drive outside of Key West when the sun went down. We could see it in the distance and it looked gorgeous even from out there. Probably would have been awesome if we’d actually been in the town. Because I didn’t get a pic I’ve put a postcard pic here so you can see what it would look like.

"Mallory Square"
"Fort Zachary Taylor"
There are many good sunset spots in Key West besides Mallory Square. Fort Zach is probably the best. You can even watch the sun hit the water while swimming in it here at Fort Zach Beach.
"White Street Pier"
White street pier is on the south end of the island, therefore, you can only get the sun setting over the water in the deepest months of winter from here.

Hi! And WELCOME! I hope this is what you're looking for....
We stayed at Sunset Key. It was very nice, not cheap. The boat goes from Key west and from sunset Key on the hour and half hour so it was never a problem getting back and forth. It is nice out there, they give you free( if you can call it that after what you pay for the room) breakfast and free fruit out by the very nice pool. The beach on Sunset key is not much and the water drops off very deep very fast. Sunset Key used to be called tank island when the Navy used it for fuel storage. I would stay there again. You can walk around Key West until you get sick of it and go back to the island any half hour you want all night long.

Another suggestion for Key west is the Marquesa Hotel, if price is no problem. You will get the real feel of Key West. Latitudes Beach Cafe is a hit or miss on dining, most of the time its good. Sunset Key is a great place but the only thing that is a real problem is going back & 4th by launch to visit Key West.

Try this place. It is on the same level as Sunset Key, maybe even higher but worth it. http://www.littlepalmisland.com/

Thank you all! Any idea which would be better, Little Palm or Sunset Key. We are looking for a quiet place overlooking palm trees and the ocean for 3 or 4 nights.

Little palm is fine, but you can't take a launch across to Key West and walk up and down Duval St. or see the sunset show on Mallory Square. To get toKey West you have to drive. If you don't care about Key West Litle Palm is great, but sunset key has everything little palm does , plus Key West.
