No Customer Service

While staying at the Galleon we encountered uninvited guests (a giant palm rat and cockroaches). We brought it to the attention of the front desk, maintenance brought in a big trap which caught the rodent, but it definitely had a negative affect on our group.
The next day I discussed the situation with management, right off the bat he asked if we opened the french doors because that's how they come in. We're on vacation overlooking the marina with great weather, of course we opened the doors. We didn't see any sign that warned us of rats coming in! Anyway, he said "he would check to see what they could do" .
The week went by without response, the last day we saw a couple of cockroaches scoot across the flow. At checkout we talked with management again and explained that it would have been nice to see some type of gesture to keep the customer happy. He took our info and said he would speak with "Tom" and then get back to us to see what the Galleon could do, again. I emailed the facility when we returned, and still no response other than the fact that they will make sure management gets the email.
We were BEYOND cordial about the incident and were not looking for a free stay, just some type of gesture to make everyone feel better about spending the money on a facility that was below our expectations. If I were an owner, I would be upset with how they (do not) respond to their guests needs. Overall, the facility was lackluster and they are obviously dependent on their convenient location to keep them afloat - certainly not their customer service. They completely blew it / us off.
I wish I would have read more reviews before making the decision to stay here, there are quite a few that discuss the lack of customer service. My advice to anyone taking the time to read this: there are other nicer places to stay that are just as close to downtown, if it cost more, it's still worth the extra to get good customer service.

NOT for small kids

Great location... outdated with very poor, very small parking spots.. however, I have been coming here every year for the last 20 yrs so I know what to expect... but be warned that small kids can EASILY fit through the balcony railings!! My 2 1/2 yr old daughter EASILY fit right through the railings with just a slight turn of her shoulders... her head went through with a couple inches to spare! Within a split second- and I was standing RIGHT there- she slid through the railings hanging on from the OUTSIDE of the balcony and said happily "Look at me!!"... I was in total shock and scared to death! Luckily, she calmly came right back in as easily as she got out. I explained to her that she can never do that again and she could get really bad boo-boo's! When I explained it to the front desk, I was rudely told they hear that alot- the resort is not meant for small kids- and I needed better parental supervision! I was so mad because I was RIGHT THERE! He asked me "What do you want us to do? Plexiglass the whole balcony??" I simply explained, maybe there could at least be a letter in the room stating that kids can fit through the railings, or some sort of warning... I mean, there were even numerous letters in the room stating to not put lobster tails down the garbage disposal, can't they at least put a small warning somewhere for the safety of their guests??? He again told me that parents need to supervise their kids.... Overall rating- good for older kids...

This is as good as it gets

The Galleon is at the Northwest tip of Key West right down in the toursit district where you can walk to the Aquarium, the night life of the docks, and the other tourist attactions. The Galleon is six stars on a scale of one to five. If you have a yacht you can moore it and fuel it at the Galleon's own marina. The rooms are palacial.

This place is expensive! I would never stay there on a personal vacation but we have moored our yacht there twice to refuel, take on water, and use the showers and pool. Also, once RCI screwed up our reservation farther up the Keys by giving the same room to two people simultaneously, so they put us up for the week in the Galleon to make up for it (and it did!).

Avoid Room E25

Loved the location, very nice room and staff. BUT our room had a very musty moldy smell that we could not get rid of and there was a black substance coming from the vents that I swept up twice a day. Yuk. With allergies this was a huge problem. Dumped the dehumidifier three times a day and they came and cleaned the filters so by the end of the week it was a little better. Could not (?) move us to a different room and other motels were all booked. First time to Key West so just toughed it out, popped Benadryl and tried to be in room as little as possible. Try to get a room on the second floor so you can leave your balcony door open if you too have allergies. Date of stay: Feb 25-March 4, 2006.

More about The Galleon Resort

Sunset-just don't forget the Cuban music!

by robertokeywest

You've got to enjoy a classic Key West sunset, but not necessarily at Mallory Square or the Hilton. If you must go to Mallory Square, don't miss the Cuban band "Caribe." They play every night at El Meson de Pepe, right next to Mallory Square amid the throngs of tourists. Their music is fantastic. The drink prices are a rip-off, but what can you do. For an alternative, stop by the Galleon Resort's Tiki Bar (Front Street). If you're in KW in the wintertime, go to Smathers Beach, sometimes the seaweed is a drag, but it's a great spot, so is Higgs Beach. One thing to remember, just because the sun is no longer visible, the best colors sometimes come after the sun is gone. What's your hurry?

Don't know that one, but for a Honeymoon, I would suggest Sunset Key Resort on the little island just off of Key West. There is a ferry over (only a couple hundred yards) to the island. It is very private and secluded and romatic, AND only a 5 minute ferry ride to the wonderful fun island of Key West. (I LOVE key West by the way...it's an absolute blast!) Last time we were there we rented a house in the Truman Annex (best location on the island)only 1 block from Duval. It was fabulous. Our own pool and backyard and within walking distance to everything. BUT if I were to go back for a honeymoon, Sunset Key Resort it would be. OR The Marquesa guest house. That one is wonderful as well.

The Galleon Resort is a "timeshare" property. The property is older but well in demand cause they are located in the heart of Old Town where you are near almost everything that goes in Key West. Another timeshare, Hyatt Sunset Harbor Resort, located near the Hilton Resort, is newer, also located in the heart of Old Town, & not so many units as the Galleon. I would recommend The Marquesa Hotel as well, as did "Mrs" on her recommendation. Hilton Sunset Island is very high in demand as well, as "Mrs" recommended but I'm not sure you want to take the boat back-in-forth to Key West just to "do your own thing" while you are there. Its only a 5/6 minute boat ride from pier to pier. Of course being newly weds maybe its right for you two. Both places are unique in their decor & very expensive but worth every $100! Both places are lovely, private & very romantic for Key West.

Mallory Square is the place to be for sunset activities where all gather for the nite's festivities. Take a romantic sunset cruise on the gulf while you are there & take in the spectacular sunset while sippin on some champaine with your mate for life.

It's a very popular timeshare resort; I've tried many times go get a reservation there and can never get it. However, I have been to Key West a couple of times and have "seen" it. Lucky you! It's a great location to go to on your honeymoon!
