Great Little Secret

On our first trip to Key West last month, we had to guess about where to stay when making reservations – We were scoping the place out for potential future visits. Based on our conversations with Barbara, the Weatherstation Inn’s manager, we chose to stay there. What a great choice that was! Barbara, Paris, and the rest of the staff were wonderfully helpful and the property was exquisitely maintained. The room was exactly as Barbara had described, and was bigger than it seemed in the picture on the website. It was great being off the beaten path, but a mere two block walk or so (and a pretty walk at that) got us to Mallory Square and the head of Duval St. We got to peek into a couple of other rooms and they all looked spectacular, and we never heard any of the other guests stirring – They sure don’t make them like they used to.

We won’t be telling our families about this place (because if they want to join us down there, they can stay somewhere else!), but we’re happy to share with you what a great experience we had.

Unique Quality: On National Registry of Historic Places. In a gated community. Wonderful lush landscape.

A Key West Hideaway

The Weatherstation Inn is located in a very nice, quiet, and gated neighborhood. The location is a short walk to busy Duval St., but far enough away to allow for relaxation and an escape from the cruise ship passengers and spring breakers crowding the downtown area on our visit. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately the facility itself is an old building and needs some work. The roof top deck and spiral stairs are currently closed due to a railing issue?? Most second floor rooms have a patio, but the decking is in need of replacement or updating. If you don't like stairs then request a first floor room, because the only way up is walking. Overall we enjoyed the experience for the value and location. The owners should make a commitment to undertaking some needed improvements though, before the maintenance issues become unmanagable. If you arrive expecting 4 star facilities you will be disappointed, but the location and staff still made the stay enjoyable. Other comparably priced rooms were miles away from Old town Key West. We walked everywhere from here and did not need a car. This Inn also only has eight rooms so the traffic in and out is minimal. We spent afternoons at the pool and never saw anyone else.

Unique Quality: Small secluded pool among the palm trees.

Major maintenance issues & understaffed

This place is pretty from the outside, but the inside is a different story. It needs a MAJOR overhaul to take car of all of the old, worn out hardware; the air conditioner that does not work properly at all, the inside door handle to the room kept falling off & we were told there's no part to fix it, the front desk computer that freezes so they can't help you look up internet sites/or print a boarding pass, the air conditioner by the pool is very loud, there is a broken elevator (since the last hurricane!), so it is aprox. 30 steps to get from the 1st floor to the second floor on steep, old stairs outside, which aren't well light. The dingy basement was flooded, where go to you get ice, due to the rain! No handicapped accessibility. There's no bellman, so you carry your bags yourself. The breakfast nook is so tiny there's no place to sit; you have to eat in you room, or outside-weather permitting. They don't make coffee until 8:30A.M., & there's no coffee maker in the room. The spiral staircase to the roof is treacherous. This place is a pile of maintenance problems & needs more staff. Only 1 person is usually there at a time. There are FAR nicer & well maintained
B & B's in Key West, such as Simonton Court of Gardens Hotel. Don't waste your money on Weatherstation Inn. Don't be fooled by their website.

Unique Quality: Truman Annex is nice, but you can rent a much nicer place for the same price, without staying in a place that's falling apart, needs to be painted & has no elevator or breakfast room. No children allowed. No smoking.

Elegant B&B In Key West

The Weatherstation is an 8 bedroom bed & breakfast in the Truman Annex in Key West. It is 1 block off of Duval Street and neighbors the Truman Little White House. I love this Inn because it is quiet, friendly and close to EVERYTHING! It is 2 blocks from Mallory Square - when you leave the complex, Kelly's Bar & Grill is directly across the street. The rooms are elegant & clean and the staff is really nice. I've stayed there 3 times and am already planning my next trip.

Unique Quality: The roof of the inn is available as a sun/observation deck. You can watch the beautiful Key West sunsets there if you decide against walking over to Mallory Square.

Coffee, juice and pastries are set out each morning and are complimentary. It is a quick and easy way to start the day. The pastries are excellent. I was surprised at the quality.
