Pinewood Gardens at Bok Towers
by yooperprof
Pinewood is a depression-era mansion that was originally built for a Pittsburgh steel-magnate. I haven't been on a tour of the house, but the gardens are an interesting example of the Mediterranean landscape design. The grounds of the Bok Tower are located on what can actually be recognized as a ridge. This is a part of Florida where there is actually a hill, and surprisingly, there are real "views".

While visiting Lake Wales, one must visit Bok Tower Gardens, Spook Hill, Chalet Suzanne, the downtown area and take a stroll around Lake Walies Lake. Growing up in Lake Wales provided me with a sense of community and security. The town has a small town sense with a big town flare for society affairs. I have many fond memories and this website isn't equipped to hold all of them.
Lake Wales Mardi Gras
by sunlovey
This sleepy little town actually comes alive during it's annual Mardi Gras celebration. Expect an all-day affair downtown with a few rides for the kids, food vendors, crafts, local bands & live music.
Around 3, expect a pretty darned good parade with floats, loud music, dancing and tons of beads! And flashing your you-know-whats is not necessary to obtain them- in fact, I'd refrain from this entirely as Lake Wales is pretty conservative.
After the parade I recommend heading over towards the beer tent (just ask, someone will point you in the direction of it). There is usually a big stage with live music next to the beer tent. BUT, you must drink your beer inside the beer tent and listen to the band from there. There's no taking your beer over to the stage area, cops make sure of that. (Or atleast this is how it's always been.)
Beer drinking and band listening goes on into the night, when it ends, I suggest to head over to the neighboring town of Winter Haven to continue the party. Where? Tanner's or Jessie's both located in Winter Haven's downtown area.
When: Check the Web site or search Lake Wales Mardi Gras for the date each year.
Where: Located on the crossroads of U.S. 27 and Highway 60; dead center of the state.
Take I-95, U.S. 1 or the Florida Turnpike to Highway 60 and go west into Lake Wales. Or Take I-75 to Highway 60 and go east into Lake Wales. Or If your'e coming in by commercial airline, fly to Orlando International Airport, take the 528 west to I-4 west to U.S 27 south into Lake Wales.
Lake Wales Art Show along the shore of Lake Wailes
by sunlovey
One spring day each year Lake Wales hosts its annual art show along Lake Wailes... This is a nice event with hundreds of booths displaying fine arts, fine crafts, paintings, clay works, glass works, graphics, metal jewelry, sculpture, wood, mixed media, photography & fiber mixed media for sale...
There is live music, food and beverage vendors and a fun arts & crafts tent for the kids. It's a great family affair and you can bring your dog on a leash too if you'd like.
For more information regarding dates and times of this event, check out the Lake Wales Arts Center Web site.
Protect Yourself - Have Fun

Make sure you have good headwear...the sun is brutal throughout the gardens. Bring PLENTY of bug sparay...they love the gardens too. Bring your best lenses, telephoto too. Extra memory cards are a must and plenty of batteries. There are fountains around with drinking water...but be smart, bring plenty.
