"lakeland"
lakeland is located just off I-4 east of tampa in polk county forida. lakeland was first settled in the 1870's and was incorporated in 1885. the town of lakeland was founded by abraham munn. lakeland grew significanly during the 1920's florida land boom. during that period many of lakeland's downtown buildings were built and a number of them are listed on the national register of historic places. in 1934 the detroit tigers baseball team came to lakeland for spring training and have been playing at joker marchant stadium ever since. during WWII lakeland was an important flight training base. many british airmen trained in lakeland in preparation for the battle of britian. in 1938 the famous architect frank lloyd wright was invited to florida southern college to design new campus buildings. wright worked in lakeland for twenty years and on the campus of florida southern you can tour nine of his creations. lakeland is known for it's excellent fresh water fishing and has a beautiful downtown historic district. for those interested in modern architecture florida southern college is a worth while stop.
