Travel Tips for Marathon

Sombrero Beach

by grandmaR

Sombrero Beach is a public beach - one of the best in the Keys. It is FREE.

The park has been recently refurbished with new picnic shelters, bath houses and a playground and is in pristine condition. A very nice sandy beach and swimming area all along the waterfront. Good parking out on the street and the area is fenced so the kids can run amuck. Pets are welcome.

There is a nice playground area with slides and things for the small fry, or they can just play on the beach. Open 7:30 a.m. until Dusk

Location: Located at the end of Sombrero Beach Blvd., two miles from Overseas Highway

12.6 acre Beach, accessible to people with disabilities.

Facilities: 1/3 of a mile of sandy beach with a roped off swimming are (No lifeguards on duty - swim at your own risk)
Pier at the west end of the beach
Two volleyball courts
Thirteen picnic pavilions with picnic tables and barbeque grills
Playground equipment
A winding pathway that takes you through a beautifully landscaped section of the beach
Two restroom facilities, each with a men's and women's restroom and accessible to people with disabilities
125 parking spaces and 6 spaces for people with disabilities
Beach is dog friendly and doggie bags are provided

Hawk Channel

by grandmaR

Hawk Channel is the ocean side of the Keys. A larger and deeper draft boat has to go on the Hawk Channel side away from the usually more protected and very much shallower waters of Florida Bay which is on the other side (it is NOT the Gulf of Mexico BTW).

The confounded bridges that Flagler build for his railroad means that there are only about 2 draw bridges (both very tricky for us as the water is shallow) and 2 fixed level bridges that we could go to to get to more protected waters or to the marinas on the bay side. The little islands or keys that are off of the highway (no bridges to them) can sometimes provide some protection from the wind. We've anchored behind Rodrieguez twice on our way up or down Hawk Channel. We can't make it from Marathon to Miami in less than 2 days and we need someplace to stop for the night. Holding is not too good here, but at least it provides a chance to get partly under shelter from the wind.

You can see in this picture how the wind and current has whipped up the sand and made the water aqua green. (Before I straightened it, the picture was tilted because the boat was rocking, and I was sticking my head over the side to get the picture.) When it is calm, the water is a nice glossy blue when it is deep (second photo), and shades of green to yellow as it gets shallower.

There are campgrounds in Marathon. It is not necessary to go to Bahia Honda as other Marathon tips suggest.

We see this campground from the stern of our boat - it looks like the campers are cheek by jowl. But my SIL had the boy scouts here, and he refused to consider it for his family. RATES (Off Season summer 2004)/(Season winter 03/04)

Camping

Bahia Honda has two camping areas. One is very open and located near the marina, and convenient for RVs. The other camping area, at Sandspur Beach, offers shade and sites separated by dense growth and further away from busy US 1.
