If you like dirt and bugs....welcome!
There are no words to describe this place. This is the most dirty hotel I have ever stayed in. I paid $146 for a hotel here and if I was a little smarter and knew any better I would have done more research and seen that right down the street is a Holiday Inn and its the same price and A LOT cleaner. It was so bad I had to leave and forfit a charge. Please dont waste your time and money.
Unique Quality: Broken down furniture outside and they even stole a bedside table from a hospital.
Opinion of Price: more expensive than average

Please don't waste your money!!
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and I am in the military and have stayed in some really bad and dirty places all over the world. For the price they charge you would at least expect a clean room. The owner is a lying crook who knows nothing about customer service and trying to get his customers to want to come back. Our room was FILTHY!! I mean dirty floors all over and stains on the walls. Bugs in the room and bed. Im telling you I never spend the time writing reviews but for this place I had to because I dont think someone else deserves to go through this. Dont waste your money!!
Unique Quality: Nothing about this facility is even remotely nice. They offer BBQ but all it is is a little tiny grill with a propane hook up. And the outside patio furniture include a broken down wooden chair next to a hospital table that is used to feed patients.

BAD BAD EXPERINCE
n April 21 my family and I arrived at the coconut cay Located in Marathon key on vacation thinking that we were very lucky to get a nice room for a decent price based on their advertisement. To say the least this resort was completely disgusting, from the moment I pulled up to the room I noticed that I was booked next to the dumpster that was over flowing with garbage clearly too small for a 30+ room hotel which mixed with the smell of feces from some kind of septic disposal tank cleverly hidden 20 feet away from the door of the room with a fence and some brush. The room had windows which had no glass or windows that would not shut and there were no screens for any of those windows, the bathroom door was broken and had clear marks of pets scratches the coaches were filthy and flee infested. Every time we had food out a swarm of ants would appear out of nowhere, the tile was mismatched, the mismatched furniture was dirty, visibly unwashed and broken, there was no phone in the room, the table was far too small to eat on for a family larger than 3, the bathroom which was disgusting had an light switch that when turned on shocked me as well as my wife, the sheets and blankets on the bed where unwashed. The beds had no headboards; they were nothing more than a box spring and mattress on a rolling metal frame. The dressers were falling apart, and half of the draws were broken to the point where they fell apart when I attempted to open them. I believe this excuse for a hotel is not up to code especially with the electrical hazard that I observed at room 60 of the Coconut Cay Resort and Marina. When I noticed the poor quality of the room I asked if I could change rooms and was told that they had nothing else available. In fact I was told to go up the road 3 miles and try to book a room at the Holiday Inn if I did not like the room I was given. Tired from a long drive with my family I decided to stay and told the woman a that I would stay the night and start looking for another place next day we literally wasted 2 additional days looking for another hotel when we finally found one we asked if we can be check out that when the receptionist became angry and told me that she could have gave us a different room if we would have asked. She never offered that instead she told me in numerous occasions that I can go to a different hotel because the whole hotel is booked for the holiday week end. I do believe that she did have rooms but for some reason beyond my comprehension she insisted that the rooms were pocked but She had the vacancy sign on and people where coming in walking in all weekend long. Upon request to leave the Coconut Cay early the woman at the front desk told me that I would be billed for the 5 days that I booked. I gut very disappointed and proceeded to ask her again to at least give me credit for the last to nights that's when they called the authorities and had me removed from the property or go to jail Once I left the Coconut Cay I developed arch and a constant etch I called my family doctor and set up an appointment for me and my family for April 28. Coconut cay is clearly negligent and they are clearly false advertising their facility of being a clean and family friendly Resort. Room 60 is clearly not suitable for human occupancy

Well Kim, as a great man once said:If you will drive a cabriolet, "There is nothing to fear, but the seagulls and other flying birds".
It is completely safe. Crime is so rare in Marathon I don't think they even have a drunk tank.

Maybe you should let us know why you are afraid in Orlando, there may be the same element of fear in Marathon.

Thanks Sarah. I knew Mickey was bad but, not that bad. Put your purses in the trunk. Tell the mugger your money is in the trunk. When they go behind the car, put it in reverse.

My husband lived and worked in Marathon for a few years before we got married. It is a very safe town. No much going on there unless you are going for lots of R&R. Have fun.

Travel Tips for Marathon
Mahi Mahi, Dolphin or Porpoise
by grandmaR
When people say 'dolphin', they immediately think Flipper. But there are two different kinds of animals that are called dophins. One of them (the Flipper type ones) are mammals. The other one is a fish, and is quite different.
The fish pictured in the mural is the fish dolphin. When people talk about catching and/or eating dolphin, lots of less informed people shy away. So - depending on their clientel, the restaurants sometimes call the fish-dolphin "mahi mahi" on their menus. Mahi mahi is the local Hawaiian name for dolphin.
Common names for animals and plants can be very confusing. It would be more precise if we called them all by their scientific names (genus and species), but THAT will never happen - at least not in my lifetime. I'm not a fisherman, but I like to EAT fish - one of my fondest memories is going to a restaurant here and eating seafood. Anything from the lobster roll at Keys Fisheries (yum yum) to Snapper Matzalan at Castaway.
Fishing is way big business in Florida, especially in the Keys where golf playing isn't so much and option and the beaches aren't so good as they are up north. Almost any restauraunt will be glad to cook your catch for you for a charge of under $10.00. I know the 7 mile Grill will even do it two or three different ways if you have enough fish for that.
Murals by Wyland
by mafootje
Wyland have been painting about 80 whaling walls in the Keys you can find a few of them. On this picture you see the one which has been painted on a K-mart Wall.
This picture is made up from 4 seperate pictures, click on it to see the full image. I have made pictures of it before but this time i was lucky enought to have sort of a free view.
The director of the Dolphin Research Center arranged to walls in the Keys to be painted on. The wall in Marathon is a showcase for the sealife that can be found around the Keys.
Wyland wanted to display the beauty of the reef which is being destroyed by men. This Whaling Wall has been made in 1990 and is called "Sperm Whales and Florida Keys Reef" it's the 26th on in it sort by Wyland.

MM 1194.1 Marathon Cay Club
by grandmaR
Marathon Cay Club (formerly Marina and Boatyard) has a gas dock (the first one on the left as you go in Boot Key channel). Be aware that the price on the sign does NOT include the 7.5% Florida tax.
In 2001, Marathon Marina (not Marathon Municipal Marina) charged $2.32/day for 30 amp, and the same for water. Cable was $3.00/day. Go figure.
They are quite *** about including the bow sprit and dinghy davits in the length you pay for, even though it makes no difference -it is the same length slip in any case.
Dockage Rates in 2006: $2.50/ft, including utilities Hours: 8am-6pm, fuel dock until 7pm Internet: Wireless & high speed
The daily rate in was $1.60/ft in 2002 and the weekly rate was $1.30/ft in 2002 . That's why we decided to stay for a week. They forbid the use of fenders on the wooden finger piers (on the pilings is OK).
The monthly rate in 2003 is $18 plus/ft (when you add all the taxes etc to the published rate of $16.50/ft. and includes 2 free pumpouts/month. Over 2 pumpouts you pay $20 per pumpout (v.s. $5.00 from the pumpout boat). Pumpouts are done only on Thursday.
They require a deposit of $150 for utilities - Electric is 10 cents/kwh and water is 3 cents a gallon and there is a minimum monthly charge for both water and electric.
If you come in the middle of the month, they pro-rate on the monthly rate by the day. If you leave in the middle of the month, they prorate by the weekly rate. They insist on billing from the first to the first. So when you leave, you can't get any money back because the weekly rate for 3 weeks is more than the monthly rate.
These fiscal policies which seem designed to get the maximum amount of money for the minimum service are the reason we will not go back, even though the marina is clean and the workers are efficient and cheerful.
Their new docks have phone connections at each. There is an expensive new restaurant. There is now also a grudgingly offered internet connection in the store. The pay phones only work intermittently with PocketMail. Hot water for the showers on the west dock side go cold when washers are filling or toilets are flushed. The east side is separate so it's better to shower over there - all the washers are on the west side.
The washers are open 24 hours a day for anyone to use - you do not have to have a slip at the marina. The washers are $2.00 each except for the big industrial one which is $3.50. This sometimes means there are no washers available because they are being used by local townfolks because they are cheaper than the local laundramat.
They say that they will not forward mail after you leave.
There's no dinghy dock, nor does there seem to be a free dock available for people that want to eat at the restaurant.
Keys
by o00o
These little islands of the Florida keys are a tropical paradise of dense trees, mangrove swamps, and sand dunes. The closeness of the reefs offers a rare glimpse without having to boat miles offshore.
Tilden's Dive Center
by grandmaR
Tilden's has a place at Hawk's Cay resort and one in Marathon. It was one of the places recommended to me by someone at the marina (one of the guys who lived on a boat said his girl friend worked there.) I never actually got to dive with them myself.
OPEN 7 days a week, 8 am to 6 pm
Tilden’s Scuba Center is a full service dive facility. They also do snorkeling and snuba.
A two tank dive is $44 if you bring all your own equipment. You can rent most equipment from them.
Tank $10.00 Nitrox Tank $18.00 Weights & Belt $5.00 Regulators & Gauges $15.00 BC $15.00 Shorty Wetsuit $7.00 Full Wetsuit $14.00 Mask $5.00 Fins $5.00 Open heel fins $7.00 Snorkel $2.00 Prescription Mask $12.00 Booties $5.00 Float Flag $5.00 Dive Light $12.00 Dive Computer $15.00 Snorkel Vest $6.00 Hoods $5.00
Nothing about this facility is even remotely nice. They offer BBQ but all it is is a little tiny grill with a propane hook up. And the outside patio furniture include a broken down wooden chair next to a hospital table that is used to feed patients.
