Sand dollars

by laskette

We will be arriving in Marco the later part of March and my 13 year old daughter really wants to find sand dollars. Does anyone know the best time and place to find these? Thank you so very much for all your help :)

She sells sea shells on the sea shore;
The shells that she sells are sea shells I'm sure.
So if she sells sea shells on the sea shore,
I'm sure that the shells are sea shore shells.

I went shell shearching on the she-shaw on Sanibel once and discovered a sand dollar whilst walking in the sea along the beach at low water. I still have it - not even broken as they are quite fragile. I think you need to keep any eye on others as well - sure to spot someone with the same intent.

Get out to the beach early in the morning - the tide and waves will wash all sorts of things ashore. Isn't there a saying about the early bird getting the worm?

What are sand dollars?!

It's the skeleton of a specific type of sea urchin.

Travel Tips for Marco Island

Beaches are so Beautiful

by peterd1331

If you visit Marco Island, the main attraction is the beach, so plan to spend time there. The beaches are bright white and have lots of shells, as well as gentle but sometimes large waves. If it is before a storm the waves will be bigger and more fun.

Also, ther is a sandbar which runs parallel to the beach about 100yds out, which you can walk to fairly easlily. You can tell aproximately where it is by the waves crashing over it. It dosesn't reach the surface, but the water is about 3 ft or shallower.

What a show!!

Southwest Florida (Naples/Bonita Springs/Marco Island ) is home to a beautiful tropical climate with sunny skies, soft breezes and an occasional afternoon shower.

It has also been called the "Lightning Capital of the World" during summer months. Its amazing, get your cam ready because its an expectacular show.....

High temperatures range from the
mid 70s in January – February to the lower 90’s during the summer months.

Most of the region’s rainfall also occurs during the Summer months.

A few tips on cleaning shells

by cheesecake17

Before taking live shells, consider the cleaning process and the fact that it is prohibited in some areas. If you do not have access to a cooking facility, it is best to leave live shells behind.

Sand dollars should be bleached in half clorox and water for several hours.

Some people prefer to dry them in the sun for a week before bleaching them. Either method works. Rinse them thoroughly after bleaching, and allow them to dry completely in the sun. If they are not white enough for your project, paint them with a white acrylic paint before hardening them with sand dollar hardener or Elmer's Glue which has been diluted with water. Sand dollars are fragile and should not be left in Clorox for extended periods, because they will crumble when handled if left too long in bleach.

To clean the shells outside, put them in Clorox for a short time. Large shells such as the horse conch may take an overnight soak to completely clean.

Barnacles should then be chipped off with an old kitchen knife and the shell may need to be soaked again.

Glaze is used to protect the color and preserve the shell, but it is never used on a specimen shell. When using shells for craft items, make the item before spraying the shells with glaze.

Don't forget....

Pack extra bags for souvenirs which are actually cheap in most stores. For example the Walgreens there sells alot of Marco Island stuff and I found a dollar mart on the way to goodland that had a lot of Marco island and goodland stuff. Don't forget your flipflops, many bathing suits, and lots of shorts. Don't worry about dressing out to go out. You will most likely always be overdressed. Good sun screen. Lots of film or a digital with lots of memory.

Parasailing in Marco

by pulgaron

Parasailing boat picking up flyers at Marco Beach. It is a lot of fun, but not wthout it's danges. I remember one time this lady was flying the parachute when the tether broke. She flew inland over the hotels and was lucky enough to land in one of the inland canals of the island. She survived, but I am sure has neede lots of therapy. Boat and parachute, little common sence, a sence of adventure, a few dollars.
