Miami Beach. Weekend and Photography and Coffee Shops

by mcgregorlink

I will be staying at the Lowes Miami Beach next week. I have the weekend free.

I would appreciate some suggestions for areas(within walking dist)to just hang out in the morning/early afternoon, take some street photography (people, places). A good coffee shop suggestion nearby would be great to read the paper, visit with locals, etc. Also, a bookstore in the area would be a plus.

Thanks for your feedback.

In addition to Lincoln Rd you'll find your hotel is very well located. Just a few blocks from Ocean Dr, Collins and Washington Avenues. There's a Cafe somewhere along Ocean Dr. and the polurar Van Dyke Cafe right on Lincoln Rd. As for bookstore, Books&Books is close to Van Dyke.

There's a great French Bakery on Collins near lincoln. I think it's called La Provence.

For photography, you could do worse than the boardwalk along the dunes. I'm always impressed with the cross section of humanity that passes me by when I walk there.

Goombay Festival

by Homanded

Bahama's version of Calle Ocho and located in Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove.

Reported to be the largest black heritage festival in the US, it started in 1977 and it has grown from there.
It is geared towards the Bahamian roots in Miami and features dancing in the streets, music, calypso and ra-gae music.
Dancing to the steel drums, watching the colorful costumes parading down the beautiful streets of Coconut Grove and sampling all that delicious Caribbean food makes for an intoxicating weekend!
I find it more fun than Calle Ocho - Dont miss it if you have a chance.
Always in August, check for specific times.

Admission is Free
Runs Friday through Sunday 10:00am - 11:00pm

The Everglades

by Joseph69

If you get a chance, do a tour of the Everglades. I was surprised how close they are to Miami. It's merely an hour or so by road.

You get to go on a very noisy boat which looks like a hovercraft and you will skim along the water to explore the wildlife. Alligators, birds, etc, are in abundance!

The tour also includes a talk about their "friendly" alligators, which was groovy.

I managed to even get to hold a little alligator! He was a friendly chap, and I didn't get bitten.
