May 14 layover from 9:50am to 9:40pm

by toemayn

Any ideas as what to do with a 11hr 50min layover in Miami on a Friday? Any VTers want to meet for a few drinks?

Wow! You can do so many things in 10 hours, and Miami is not an exception. Depends what your interests are. If your lay-over is at MIA airport, you can hire a cab if you want to save time. MIA airport will soon have a train service.

1- Maybe SouthBeach if you like the Ocean. They have plenty of bars, restaurants and shops along Ocean Drive, Washington Street and Lincoln Road. You might want to see a local map to get familiar with. It’s about 12 miles from the airport and cab ride is about 35 dollars.

2- You can also visit Downtown Miami if you like to be surrounded by buildings, and still is right in front of the ocean. They have an ocean view shopping mall called Bayside with life music in the afternoon, international restaurants (including famous local Cuban food and Miami Hard Rock Cafe), bars and many shops. Ride is about 8 miles and cab fare to Downtown Miami is around 28 dollars.

3- Maybe Coco Walk in Coconut Grove or Miracle Mile in Coral Gables if you want something closer to the airport.

3.1 Cocowalk area includes open mall and street shops, bars and restaurants. Typical Mediterranean architecture. It’s about 6 miles from MIA Airport. And 22 dollars cab ride.

3.2 Miracle Mile area is about shops, restaurants and bars. Also typical Mediterranean architecture. Try the corner of Miracle Mile and Ponce de Leon Boulevard. You find the most popular places right there. All upscale. It’s about 4 miles from MIA Airport and 18 dollars cab ride.

Hope you have a good time!

Coco Walk is a nice place to walk. There are many shops, malls and movie theaters there. I remember that i ate a crepe with nutella and strawberry in one of the middle of outlets in Coco Walk. It was nice!!

Take a drive throughout the city starting in Coral Gables, then visit Little Havana, Little Haiti, and the folks on the beach. I think this is the best way to get an understanding of the dynamics of out city.

Bicentennial Park

by mikey_e

Bicentennial Park is, undoubtedly, dedicated to the US bicentennial of 1976 (i.e. two hundred years since the Declaration of Independence). The park, today, is a place in which plenty of people simply hang out and enjoy Miami’s usually beautiful weather. When I came to the park, someone was taking pictures of a Ferrari with the park as a backdrop. There were some unsavoury characters lounging at the entrance to the park, but I don’t think it’s particularly dangerous if you don’t spend too much time there after dark.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Well, it seems to me that a Museum in Miami is a bit 'off the beaten path'. People don't come here to visit museums, but if you've got a little spare time after visiting all the Disney stuff, take a visit to this Museum with interesting XXth century art.
More off the Beaten Path seems to be a Holocaust Museum in Miami, YES, there is one!!!
