Newport Beachside collins ave. in Miami

by jujuc410

Hi~
I am planning a cruise in April leaving out of Miami...i know nightmare..:)
Trying to get an idea of the distance between the Port of Miami and Collins Ave. where we are staying a couple of days at the Newport Beachside then from the Hotel to the airport. Not too sure if we should cab it, rent a car etc....any suggestions? Someone mentioned the Miami airport is about 20 miles from the Hotel.

Any input would be greatly appreciated....juju

car rental is cheap if you need to go places. I play golf out there and it is easy to rent and return at the airport. Problem is parking, some hotels charge more to park the car than rental per day. If going to the cruise from the airport, check with the info desk to see if they have a shuttle bs there. They have been through the drill before, so they know. I cruise out of Tampa and the cab knew exactly where to go.

In a similar situation! I too am cruising in April, out of Miami and arriving a couple of days early.

However this isn't my first time, the problem is things have changed. In the past, you could rent a car from the airport (MIA), then when you returned the car, they offered a free shuttle to the cruise port. When you returned from your cruise, the shuttle would pick you up and take you back to the car rental office.

Now they only offer free shuttles to and from the airport!

So unless I find something better, I plan to return my car, catch the shuttle then grab a cab.

According to the MIA website cabs are flat rate of $24 to the port. For two people this is cheaper than shuttle companies, who charge by the person.

Word to the wise make sure you get the flat rate, there are a fair amount of dishonest cab drivers in Miami!

If you take a cab from your hotel, make sure you write down the cab's #, and request he/she give you a written receipt. This way if he/she tries to rip you off, you have documentation.

Travel Tips for Miami

Can you paint the place pink by Monday?

by BarbBC3

Everyone has seen the shots of South Beach on Miami Vice, with Crockett and Tubbs chasing criminals against a backdrop of pink and blue buildings. What many people, even locals, don’t know is that the Art Deco buildings were painted pastel colors BECAUSE of Miami Vice! All of these buildings, built in the 1930s and ‘40s, were originally painted white, beige and cream colors because architects wanted them to look modern and elegant. When the Miami Vice crew came along, they wanted the buildings to “pop” on screen and asked hotel owners to paint it in time for the film shoot. Practically overnight, the building was painted a wacky color - and it was left that way after the shoot was over. Other hotels decided to join in on the new color scheme and painted on their own. So, thanks to Miami Vice, we now have almost every color of the rainbow represented in South Beach. I only wish the show hadn’t given us such a bad reputation! Unfortunately, people are still under the impression that we all carry guns here in Miami.

Check mdpl.org for walking tours of the Art Deco district.

Miami Seaquarium

by seagoingJLW

Located at 4400 Rickenbacker Causeway, the Miami Seaquarium offers a lot. It is the home of aquatic stars like Flipper, Salty the Sea Lion, and Lolita, the orca.

There is a shark channel and several manatees. There is a 750,000 gallon tropical reef aquarium.

For children, there is a "Discovery Bay" area.

There is a dolphin show among others. Phone: 305-361-5705

Miami has a large Hispanic population which likes to kiss and/or hug you when they meet or say goodbye. Don't freak out if a stranger kisses you goodbye after they've talked with you for awhile. That's just part of the culture.

Secret Spot: Miami Skyline at Night

by YearAroundTheWorld

If you're looking for a perfect photo location in Miami, look no further than under the McArthur Causeway. The McArthur Causeway is the bridge that links Miami Beach to the Mainland. When you drive over this causeway, you'll get a great view of the Miami city skyline... but to get an even better view that you can really sit back and soak up, you have to go UNDER the causeway.

To get to the secret photo spot, get onto I-395 and head over to the Miami Children's Museum exit (Watson Island). Drive to the NW corner of the little island area and you'll find you can drive your car under the bridge.

The best time to check out this spot is at night, on the weekends, from maybe 10pm to midnight. This is when all the city's lights will be at their best. You may run into some local fishermen, or a professional photo shoot in progress. It's a great place to bring a date too!
