Things to do with kids in July

by jennwerner

We are planning a big trip to the Miami area in July for 9 days. We are renting a house in Hollywood Beach and we are taking our two children ages 11 and 1. Is there a list somewhere of good activites for kids?? Any suggestions of must sees like aquariums or gator farms or maybe something a little more original. Thanks in advance. Jennifer

Miami has some great attractions for kids including (Parrot) Jungle Island, Seaquarium (where you can swim with the dolphins), Children's Museum, MetroZoo, Science Museum (better for the 11 year old), Monkey Jungle, and the Everglades - air boat ride, Everglades Alligator Farm (which is not part of the Everglades). Have a great time!

I definitely advise going to Parrot Jungle it’s the perfect attraction for the whole family. As for beaches, Crandon Park is a nice, more family friendly, alternative to Miami Beach. And if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary I highly recommend Action Catamarans charter service. You and your family would get the opportunity to experience something not many people usually experience while visiting Miami.

Here are some helpful links. Happy travels.

Travel Tips for Miami

Little Havana

by Shaft28

What I thought was going to be the highlight of the trip, turned out to not even be in the ranking.
My wife and I headed to South Beach for our honeymoon, decided to spend a morning in Little Havana.
Honestly, beside the great food at Versailles,
there was nothing to do.
I'm sure during a festival it is fantastic, but the way some of the tips are and travel books that have made this into something it is not.
Besides festival time, this is just an old neighborhood in which mostly people of Cuban heritage live.
If you get kicks out of a Cunab dry cleaner, a Cuban video store and a Cuban Taco Bell...well this is the spot.
So if you plan a trip based on this part of town, be sure something noteworthy is happening. Otherwise, it is kind of a bad part of town with more than its share of vagrants. On the plus side, do plan a lunch at one of their great restraunts. Very good food, but you can find just as good around town.
(Frankly we have a place in Portland that serves a better Cuban Sandwich and Mojito...)
Sorry, I wish I wasn't disappointed either.

Go to South Beach. I’m sure you must have heard stories - it is all you have heard and more! Make sure you dress to impress! Ladies can get in many places for free. If you’re low on cash, it is just as interesting to walk up and down the road. Some of the scenes you will see on the street are better than what’s happening in the clubs!

Calle Ocho - World's Largest Block Party

by Homanded

Once a year Little Havana's Calle Ocho (S.W. 8th Street) becomes one large block party!
Featuring latin flavors, music and dancing with guest appearances by local and international artists.
Dancing in the streets, taste of international latin dishes and games/prizes which last the weekend.
You can stroll through little Havana's streets, buying everything from local foods and delicacies to hand rolled cigars.
Local restaurants, vying for your business, offer up free samples or good incentives to get you in through the doors!
Don't miss it, it's one big BLAST - Latin Style!

Versace's Mansion

by Nantosvelta

In 1997, Versace was shot to death in front of his mansion in Miami, Florida. Versace's killer is allegedly a serial killer. The incident happened as the 50-year-old designer returned from the fashionable News Café where he bought breakfast and Italian newspapers.

Just off of Main Highway in...

Just off of Main Highway in bustling downtown Coconut Grove, you can discover the atmosphere of the days of yore. The Barnacle State Historic Site contains the oldest home in Dade County in its original location. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay, the Barnacle was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's most charming and influential pioneers. The Florida Park Service acquired the remaining five acres of Munroe's original 40-acre homesite from his descendants in 1973. It is one of the best preserved historic sites you will find and a visit here provides a glimpse into the rich past of the Era of the Bay.
