    A Decent Airport Hotel

Let's not be mistaken; the Miami Airport Marriott is by no means a luxury hotel. The lobby is beautifully renovated and modern, but the rooms are badly in need of touch ups, as are the elevators. This is a good option if you're only staying overnight and are not planning to go into Miami or the surrounding area. There are a few very good Cuban places near by for breakfast or lunch and a free shuttle to the departures area of the airport. If, however, you're planning on spending more time in the room or going into Miami itself, it may be better to look elsewhere, particularly for a hotel in the downtown area. It is not an easy ride into the city by taxi, and public transit if a nightmare. It cost me about $15 to get from the shopping mall about 10 minutes from the hotel to Calle Ocho and 12th. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful, and the service is generally good. Despite the aged appearance of the rooms, they are nonetheless clean and well-kept, and the large flat-screen TVs make it easy to forgive some of the shortcomings. There's a Starbucks in the lobby of the hotel, as well as a sports bar with numerous TVs, should you decide to spend a night in.

Unique Quality: Internet service here costs $14 per night. However, if you get the special package (I don't know which one, I thought I had booked a standard room), the rate includes internet and parking, which are both great boons to the traveler. I won't lie, one of the best qualities of this hotel is actually outside its gates. Sabor Latino, a Cuban diner, has insanely good, cheap breakfast. See my tip on the restaurant for exactly why this is a draw. The hotel also has an outdoor swimming pool and sundeck, both of which will come in handy given the hellish humidity of Miami.

Directions: Catch the Marriott shuttle at the departures level. Everything works Cuban-style here, so you will have to flag it down to get it to stop, possibly by going into the street.

A Great Cuban Diner

by mikey_e about Sabor Latino

Sabor Latino is a great little diner that is undoubtedly overlooked by anyone not staying right near the airport. Indeed, I only noticed it because I was staying at the Miami Airport Marriott and it was right outside of the parking lot. The service here is sort of typical of a diner, where the waitresses alternate between rudeness, abruptness and overflowing sweetness. The food here, nevertheless, is delicious and is typical Cuban-American cuisine. The d├ęcor of the place may leave something to be desired, but it really just adds to the sense of this being a thorough blend of the American ideal diner and Cuban love of good food and loud music. I had the plantain omelette with guanabana juice and Cuban bread. It probably contained 2000 calories in all, but it was too delicious not to wolf it down.

Another Where to Stay Question

by MapleMoose

I would like to spend a couple of days in Miami before or after a cruise. I would like to be not more than a short taxi ride from the cruise ship terminal and a shuttle bus ride from the airport. Must be safe and walkable area with lots of restaurants, bars and shopping. Does Miami Beach fit this description? Is it easy access to the cruise ships and is it an entirely safe area? Or is it better to be in Miami itself? Thanks.
I would be looking for an area with hotels not more than $150 a night normally. No....not for the Super Bowl! Thanks

Greetings MapleGoose!

My relatives come down here every year for a 7-day cruise. Here are some of the hotels I would recommend with shuttle service, but as far as restaurants, bars, and shopping? The best thing to do would be to rent a car at the hotel and drive to the Pier, it has everything you're looking for in one location! Miami Beach can be very spendy especially during the winter season because this is when most people travel to south florida to get away from the cold!!!

Here's a small list of hotels:
*SpringHill Suites by Marriott Miami Airport South (I think has shuttle to airport and Port of Miami)
*Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Miami Airport South
*Days Inn Miami Intl Airport
*Baymont Inn & Suites Miami Airport West

Hopefully, this will help, but if you're planning this during the Super Bowl weekend, then good luck!!! ;o)

Can I presume that there are shuttles to the Cruise terminal from Collins/Lincoln area? I have not had much success at googling them? I just noticed that Miami has been rated one of the 10 worst cruise terminals because of the crowds and congestion. Also, what is the transportation situation, i.e cost of taxis and shuttles to the airport from this area. By the way,the time frame hsre would be late September, early October, hopefully after hurricane season starts to wind down.
