miami marathon

by mjqd

My husband is running the marathon at the end of January. We have not booked a hotel yet and have found that the ones near the start and finish lines are filled. We are fron NH and are unfamiliar with Miami so we are not sure where to stay. We were thinking of trying the Coconut Grove area because we read that there is a good viewing spot of the runners there. I will want to see him run at some point during the marathon and somehow get to the finish area also. Does anyone have any idea of a good area to look for hotels that would make it easy to get around? Are there any hotels near public transportation to get to the finish line? Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Coconut Grove would be a good choice. It looks like the runners go thru the grove (or very close ) twice and you could take metro rail to downtown for start/ finish easily enough. There are hotels on US # 1 that would give good access to metro rail and be a walkable distance to the grove.
There are also some hotels in Coral Gables on US # 1 near Univ. of Miami that would give good metro rail access to go to the start/finish line and the grove.
Really you could look at the Marathon map and look at the metrorail map and see where they come close to each other(lots of places)and get a room by any of the metro rail stations.

Thanks for the advice. We think we will stay at the Doubletree near Coconut Grove. I guess it's a 10 minute walk from there. I read that there will be an ING cheer zone in the park there across from the Mutiny hotel, so I think I'll watch from there. I don't know how long a walk it is to the metrorail from the park so now I am thinking of taking a taxi to the finish line.

The park across from the mutiny is very nice, you will be right in the heart of the grove.
The doubletree is an excellent choice.
A cab to the finish line should be easy, ask the cabbie to take Bayshore Drive and Brickle Ave. for the best scenery( instead of US1).
oops, bayshore and brickle may be closed I think they are part of the marathon course.
At the doubletree they can tell you exactly how far the walk is to the metrorail, but even if you get the metrorail you still have to transfer to the people mover to get down to Biscayne Blvd for the start/ finish.
Cab might be easier.

Travel Tips for Miami

You must watch a guitarist...

by Psychokiwi

You must watch a guitarist play. His name is Alex Fox, and he performs outside the restaurant Y Papariza (the spelling is probably wrong). If you want to see him, do not eat at the restaurant. They give you small portions and bill you a great deal. I miss the energy that Miami has.

Art Deco Distric

by cobrioc

More than 400 registred historic landmark buildings an about 800 buildings total the Deco District always makes for an interesting walk. For an interesting if somewhat expensive view of the city, you can take a spin over the city on an air tour from Auction Helicopters.
Biscayne Helicopters 305-252-3883
does four-person helicopter tour of Miami for $650/hour so a 15-minute flight, which is more than enough to see Miami Beach and downtown Miami , would run you $41 per person.

Packing List

by cobrioc

Don't be afraid of packing your most outrageus and
colorful clothes. On Miami Beach anything goes.
A good tip is a light wrap to trow over on a beach.
From May to the middle of June , and from the middle of September to the end of October, it can get a bit cooler, so pack a couple of light jumpers or a jacket for those chiller evening. In July and August the tempeture rises to over 90F /at
nights too/ make sure you have light and airy clothes with you. Let's get one thing straight: the sun burns very hot here.Don't forget your suncream. As you may expect, beauty products and suncreams are expensive here, so bring you favoraties with you.Use a very high protection factor. Miami always sunny and beautiful, and unlike any other place on earth.

Abundant Wildlife in the Everglades!

by maryellen50

It is amazing the amount of wildlife we saw every time our airboat stopped to view an animal. We saw several alligators including a nest of babies. This sweet softshell turtle approached our airboat as we were watching the alligators!

The most beautiful shopping-center

by OrlandoBR about The Falls

The Falls is very far from downtown Miami, but to the south. It's an open-air mall, not so big but filled with very good brands and department stores like Bloomingdale's, and some good restaurants too.
