The Astor Hotel

by 43beckos

Hi VT'ers

Staying at the Astor Hotel in Washington Avenue.

Any recommendations for restaurants and bars in that area. Not looking for a spring break style experience, but would like somewhere lively possibly with live music.

If you have some extra spending money, try Barton G's for dinner. It's off the beaten path and is delish! Not a place for one person though...portions are meant to be shared (although it is in no way family style)and the desserts - unbelievable!

Enjoy!

Do you like Greek Food? Try Taberna Oppa at the very south end of South Beach, across from Nikky Beach. Nobody leaves the place until you dance on the tables( I mean on top of the tables) with the belly dancers. That should give you an idea of the type of place it is. It is a lot of fun, and they give you a lot of food. Like the entry that gives you everything on the menu for one price. OPPA.

Regards.

Travel Tips for Miami Beach

Look at me...

by Shaft28

One of the favorite past times of tourists and locals alike is people watching. You can't help but do it.
Anywhere on Ocean Blvd, when you pull up a seat to have a meal or drink a mojito - people are everywhere. Some beautiful, some not so beautiful and some downright freaks.
What we noticed were a lot of "LOOK AT ME" people.
Definition- I need attention so I'm going to have crazy hair, low cut top, see through top, butt cheeks neasking out, carry a albino boa constrictor, have any other animal on my person, scream when I talk or just look like an all around hoochie mamma. That fine line of being individual and being downright lame.
Lots of people desperate for attention, kind of nice to blend in like my wife and I. That way we can watch everyone else. Fun. The more unattractive, the less clothing. Almost every time.

Sturdy suitcase resistant to the plane transportation The weather is hot or warm in any season. Light clothes are suitable.
But think to the rain : a rain jacket can be useful. Bring a moskito repellent in any season. Do not forget :
- a flash to soften the shadows
- filters to shoot magnificient sunrises Leave your passpart in the room and have a safety pocket for your cash.

South Beach, specially south...

South Beach, specially south of 5th Street is rich in jewish history. South Beach was a popular destination for many jewish families. Due to zoning restrictions north of 5th Street during the begining of the century, a lot of jewish families lived south of 5th Street. You can see their influence at the Jewish Museum, on Washington and 3rd Street. This is a historical jewel most people miss during their visit to South Beach. Check out the magnificent cut glass windows, just the windows are worth the trip.

Sunday Beach Party @ Nikkis...

Sunday Beach Party @ Nikkis Beach Club
Cover charge $20(in 2001). 3pm-5am (I think that’s when it finishes anyway). ‘Balearic Beats from Ibiza’
I LOVED THIS PLACE!! If you don’t go anywhere else for nightlife in Miami, you MUST go here, and save it for Sunday, which is by far the best night to go. I have never experienced a place like this before anywhere else in the world, you would only find it in Miami! Opens 3pm, but doesn’t really get busy until 7pm. Its all situated on the beach outside, in what I can only describe as the biggest garden patio party I’ve ever experienced! Split into different sections by hedges and palm trees, each area accessible through the fairy lit pathways. Right at the end are tee-pees and floor cushions. A beach area, presumably used during the sun light hours, have Thai style lounge beds. Lotsof plush wooden patio furniture scattered around and funky leather sofas. Food is also served.
The undercover area plays uplifting funky house, all the latest tunes, whereas the other outdoor areas are more chilled out with people hanging around chatting and being seen! The odd celebrity passing through. Apparently sporting the ‘highest beautiful person ratio in the country per square foot’ as quoted by ‘egotrip’ magazine!

Taxis are the way to go on the beach

by goingsolo

since there's so much traffic and its spread out around apprixmately 15 street blocks north to south and several avenues, many locals and tourists will take cabs around S. Beach. Its a great idea if you're staying on S. Beach to just hop a cab to wherever you're going. Two or three cab rides will about equal the cost of valet parking at one place.
