South Beach travel for single women

by mmyerspa

I am traveling to Miami with my teenage daughter...it is a brief mother-daughter trip. Is it safe or unsafe to stay in South Beach? What hotels, preferably with pool, would you recommend. We're hoping to stay in the low $100s.

I don't think there is a need to be in SoBe unless you are of drinking age. I would look further north of there, like Ft. Lauderdale or Hollywood Beach

South Beach is generally fine, safety-wise. I'm a single woman who often attends a convention there, dinners out, and walks all over. There are plenty of pedestrians (just stay where there are pedestrians, I'd say), and also an easy-to-use bus service, plus taxis. Just don't do things like leave your valuables on a beach while you swim! And this applies to anywhere in the world. I can't advise on hotels as my company assigns me -- usually the Holiday Inn at very inflated prices (around $250), so you'll have to research hotels a bit. Maybe some other VTers will come on to answer the hotel question, or do a search on VT or TripAdvisor. Have a good time!

South Beach in my opinion is the safest part of Miami. I also would recommend it, even if you arn't over 21. The beach is great, the restaurants and shops on Lincoln Road are good, and it's just a fun area to hang around. Try hotels.com or priceline.com on finding a hotel. You probally will need to name your own price in priceline to get a hotel in South Beach in the low 100's.

I got a good hotel (The Catalina) for under $100 a night through hotwire. So, definitely check out all the discount websites for hotels. The Catalina has a rooftop pool as well as a regular pool.

Umm...South Beach is safe and beautiful but I didn't like it. A lot of rich people go there. Expect to pay at least $1 an hour just to park. To park at the Catalina was around $50 a day. On top of that any clubs cost around $40 to enter. Clothing was decently priced. Lots of women at the pool and the beach go topless. Also, the bathrooms/changing rooms for the beach are few and far between...in fact I only found one and the majority of my trip it was closed.

A nice pool in Miami (if you have your own transportation) is the Venetian Pool. It is cheap too.

Recently went to South Beach with my two teenage nieces (15 & 18). We felt very safe. Try looking for a hotel on Collins Avenue in the 200 - 700 block addresses. There are a couple of parking garages off Collins where you can park for about $8/day, which is a deal for Miami. I WOULD recommend South Beach over other parts of Miami.

Travel Tips for Miami Beach

Freedom Tower - downtown Miami

by Ewingjr98

Freedom Tower was built in 1925 as memorial to Cubans that had immigrated to the US. The tower stands 255 feet above the city streets; was designed after the Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain; and was originally the headquarters of The Miami News. After the newspaper sold the property in 1957, the US government used the site to process hundreds of thousands of refugees from Cuba. The federal government sold the tower in 1974, and year later, in 1997, the tower was converted to a museum and renamed to Freedom Tower. In 2005 developers donated the Freedom Tower to Miami Dade College.

Miami Beach and Miami is like...

by mannymiami

Miami Beach and Miami is like the Quebec of the USA , its Latin flavor makes this town unique ,so if your going to feel insulted and upset because Latinos and Spanish is the majority here I suggest go somewhere else. Bigotry has no place here!!!

Miami Beach

by Hexepatty

With fares from New York well under $200, the connection between Miami Beach and the Big Apple never been easier. Like Manhattan, Miami Beach is a long, slender strip of land with water on both sides. Actually, Miami Beach is 25 islands each with its own character.

by jhorsfield30 about Clevelander Bar and Hotel

The Clevelander Hotel, a legendary landmark located in the heart of Miami Beach's historic Art Deco district, offers guests a front door entrance to America's favorite playground - South Beach. Located at the center of it all, on (in)famous Ocean Drive, the Clevelander has long been known as the hottest spot in South Beach.
For those who like to live it up, five pool side bars & stage, live performances and great music will keep you moving till the late night hours.
If the thrill of victory is more your style, catch the latest sports action at the best sports bar on ocean drive. With 13 screens, you won't miss a single score, while enjoying on one of several Clevelander specialty drinks.

Staff very friendly and drinks are expensive but about right for south beach, catch the happy hours(around 3-4 afternoon for 50% off),, great music some 80's mixed in and live music at the nights,, definately worth a drop in. N/A

No tables, beds

by vanessadb about BED

BED is a nightclub/lounge. And yes, there are lots of beds: beds to sit on, beds to drink on, and beds to eat on. It's very happening on Wednesdays right now.

The food is supposedly out of this world... No shorts, no sneakers.
