3 nights in Miami

We were on a fly drive and chose this hotel as it was recommended in our guide book as reasonably priced and we were only to be there for 3 nights.
The location is good, only a few minutes walk from the beach and Ocean Drive and the room was clean and airy and adequetly furnished. There is a small carpark alongside and a swimming pool.

Unique Quality: Built in the art deco style which gives the hotel character.

More about Carlton Hotel

Can't beat the price or location

by TripAdvisor Member ztraveler-6

I was at the hotel for Art Basel and had a great stay. The staff was incredible helpful and best of all the price and the location were great. The hotel is not perfect. It aint the Ritz, so dont expect it, but it is a cool, hip but affordable hotel. PS It also helped that they give free drinks in the evenings from 5 to 6.

good hotel getting better

by TripAdvisor Member mmkildy

The Carlton isn't quite ready for prime time, but it's getting there.
It's well-located a block off the ultra-noisy, boozy Ocean avenue, and it's close to shopping areas. We stayed three nights via a travel package and can't complain about the price.
But the hallways smell of mildew disinfectant--think of that heavy scent sprayed in gas station restrooms. And the lobby breakfast area was under construction. There are also small hidden charges--nothing that other hotels don't dream up--but nonetheless annoying. For example, parking and breakfast coffee can be added to the bill.
Be advised--South Beach is raucus and loud. Bars and restaurants can be expensive. Everyone is cashing in on this hot and fun tourist area. This hotel is a reasonable bargain but it needs to get its act together.

You get what you pay for

Our first time staying right in South Beach. We wanted something decent but affordable. Here's what we found:

5 reasons to stay at the Carlton:
1. price is good value
2. great location on Collins a minute from the start of Ocean Avenue
3. rooms are clean
4. continental breakfast at $5.50 is handy, fast, reasonable price
5. free beach towels and chairs

4 reasons NOT to stay at the Carlton:
1. location is noisy - maybe one of the noisiest on Collins (?) - take earplugs
2. service is haphazard - we didn't get soap or facecloths 2 days in a row and our room wasn't made up one day until 5:00pm
3. rooms are small and the advertised queen-sized beds aren't queens, they're doubles
4. parking at 13th street is cheap/close but at 5 in the morning for an early flight it felt like we were taking our life in our hands - at that time of day the hookers and gangstas are everywhere

Overall, it was an OK experience - take the bad with the good - and the overall value is probably pretty good. We might go back.

OK hotel

by TripAdvisor Member Tricia45

The Carlton is in a great location - a block away from Ocean Drive and near shops on Collins. But - and it's a big but - we hardly got any sleep for the 4 nights we were there despite asking for a quiet room. One night we were woken at 1.30am by someone power drilling in the room next door; the back of the hotel is an alleyway where car alarms go off and the refuse trucks reverse complete with alarm early in the morning; and another night someone was apparently fixing some kind of plumbing problem which included lots of banging on pipes. Add to this, the groups of teenagers in the 2 rooms next door, who couldn't close a door without trying to bang it through the wall and had loud conversations right outside our door at 3am, and it doesn't make for a very relaxing stay!
The staff are pleasant and helpful, but denied that there was anyone drilling or banging until they heard it themselves.
I would recommend spending a little more and staying in one of the bigger hotels a bit furthur along the beach if you like to sleep at night!

Only Stay If Rates Are LOW

by TripAdvisor Member Novaya

We booked 2 nights in early December for a "grand opening" price of $91/night. Although really, it was more like $96 since they charge a 'resort' fee for the use of beach towels/chairs/pool etcetc. And don't forget the extra $25/night for parking in the two SMALL lot sthat probably couldn't hold more than about 15cars combined. (TIP: make sure you get your spot early, else you're out of luck- no placing dibbs on the spots...) To be fair though- parking in that area is scarce , so the fee is on par with all the other hotels- and it's not valet so at least you can get the to the car quickly.

The lobby is nicely renovated- but you don't stay in the lobby long... The rooms were pretty basic. Be warned- for the under $100 in South Beach- it met my expectations- but definitely do not expect a super fancy place even IF they said they've renovated.

The plus is that the location is pretty decent. Only 2 blocks or so from Lincoln road and one street over from Ocean drive and the beach. Walking distance to many restaurants and close to a couple all night drugstores.

The room had a flimsy door- so don't leave anything too valuable in there-- one kick from a 12 year old kid might have opened it. The bathroom was TINY! Forget about counter space. It's vintage style all the way in there. We had 4 people in the room- and only a bottle each of shampoo/condition, and one small bar of soap-- not to mention only enough towels for 3 people...And we hoped they would replace the towels the 2nd night and give us more shampoo etc... NOPE... nothing at all....only the bed were remade.

The room itself was very poorly lit with one little globe light. We had to keep the closet open with the light on in there just to get the room bright enough. In the closet was a non-functioning safe and a small mini-fridge. It was stocked with (pricey) drinks- but we emptied that out and just used the fridge.

We had a room facing Collins Ave-- very noisy throughout the night- luckily I was too tired to be kept up.

Breakfast was $6-- we never participated since it didn't seem worthwhile. Never used the pool- it looked passable if you didn't want to make the trek to the beach although it looked like it needed a good cleaning due to all the debris at the bottom.

Checkin and checkout was a little slow-- about 20minutes and 10 minutes respectively.

All in all- this would be a good choice as long as the rates stayed around $100. Good for those on a budget but needing to stay in central South Beach.

Great location, good value

by TripAdvisor Member s&p_on_hols

This place seemed to have a few mixed reviews but we stayed there for 4 nights and it was difficult to fault it. The room was big, bright and airy. The hotel may be pretty basic, but it's clean, the staff were extremely friendly and it's big selling point is the location. The beach is a 5 min walk from the hotel and easy walk to shops, restaurants etc.

It's all about the Location!

by TripAdvisor Member jerseyjenn

We stayed at this Hotel in Sept of 2006, and overall had a positive experience. This was not our first time to South Beach, and we had stayed at the Loews before, which is wonderful, but your paying A LOT! We choose The Carlton for it’s Prime Location to everything and it’s price. As you all know S.Beach is not a cheap place! This place is not the Ritz if that’s what you’re looking for at S. Beach. It is in a great location with very friendly staff. The Lobby is very chic, and has a decent size pool. The pool area would be better if they had cushions for the lounge chairs. Because of the location you do hear some noise at night, but I never remember having a big problem falling asleep. Our room was clean and the linens were fresh and clean. Overall, I liked the overall look of the hotel.

The two suggestions I would have for this hotel

1.The pool area needs cushions for the lounge chairs.
2.Since our room was right by the back door and stairs I would of felt better if this door was not left open all night.

The positives

1.Great Location
2.Great Price
3.Friendly Staff
4.Beach chairs and towels

BEWARE! I need a new credit card because of this hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member lovebeachtravel

The funny thing is, I was going to give this hotel a half decent review because of the location and the decor in the room, but since they started charging my credit card for random amounts between $10 (twice) and $124 last month ( 3 MONTHS AFTER I CHECKED OUT AND PAID EVERYTHING I OWED) they're getting this review instead.
I cancelled my credit acrd because of them. No one at the front desk seems to be able to do anything about this and the manager and the accountant are too busy to call me back. Needless to say i will never stay here again. Watch out if you do.

Great location, wonderful staff!

by TripAdvisor Member SanUrs

I had a 3 night stay here and the location can not be beat--right near beach, shopping, restaurants. The staff was terrific-- friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean, big and had all the comforts. Great value for all that you get!!
