A bad reputation hotel

I was reluctant to choose this hotel because of the bad reviews on Tripadvisor. But we are less fussy than Americans and we travelled in early November 2007, I mean during the low season, and we knew Sobe was not croudy, so we should get a good service.
I made the reservation through OPODO and I got a fair price : 57.80 euros tax included (77$) per night. Sure, for this price, we could not expect a room facing the beach.

Room : rather large, with 2 queen beds, a sofa, facing the neighbor hotel wall and a small piece of ocean on the right, through a non opening window
Smoke : the hotel is completly non smoking (we are not smokers) and our room had no smell
TV : few channels, with poor image. But the tourists who said there were only 2 English channels are wrong, we got 4, including NBC Florida... It does not matter : my wife understands Spanish
Fridge: a minibar
Coffee maker : we got one after request
Bath room : tub and shower, + toiletterie + hair dryer
Internet : it is possible to be linked in the room for 4$/min but the business center is free
Safe : free
Breakfast : it is not complimentary and the beginning hour (7:00 AM) is not respected. It does not matter, with the jet lag we took our breakfast at 5:00 AM at Jerry's Famous Dely or at the 11th street diner on Washington (the Denny's, 2947 Collins, our early bird HQ, has been demolished)
Newspapers : in the lobby
Pool : we had this rather large pool for us. But why it is closed at 5:00PM ?
Ocean : the hotel has a direct access to the beach and the boardwalk but the gate is closed at 6:00PM
Parking : there is a valet parking with a crazy price : 45$ + tax . Fortunately, we had not rented a car. We found nearby a public parking at 8$ per day (see the last attached picture)

Unique Quality: This hotel is not luxurious but it supplies at a fair price what we were gone to have. As the wise Americans say : "you get what you pay for" .
But if I had had a rented car, I would be angry to pay 50$ a day for the parking.
If you want a better room in this hotel (and more expensive), ask for a tiled room facing the ocean.

As my prior hotels in Miami Beach, The Riande Continental will be in the near future remodeled to be upgraded and to be more expensive...

We went back the 1st week of December 2008. Our room was a bit dirty and seedy but the price have made a jump : 244$, due to the season and the ocean view we had from the window.

Hotel from Hell!

What a dump! A/C didn't work. Walls needed to be painted. Bathroom had no cold water. Bathroom floors weren't cleaned. Sheets didn't look clean. lobby smelled. bugs in shower. Cereal at breakfast was stale. No one in "restaurant" or at bar. Towels like sandpaper. Should have listened to tripadvisor reviews....not worth your $.

Riande A-OK!

by A TripAdvisor Member

I just returned from SoBe last night and I must say that I don't have a single complaint about the Riande. I booked a package that included airfare and accomodations that included the Riande. After doing so, I read all the reviews posted on this site and was absolutely terrifed to see what was to come. I was quite pleasently surprised. The #1 thing that you've got to remember that this is SOUTH BEACH, an extremely trendy and expensive (but not to mention beautiful and very fun) place to vacation. You get what you pay for. You can spend as much as you want to and probably end up spending more than you planned. The walls of the room were scuffed in some places, but that happens at due to the high number of people they serve. Bathroom was clean-EXTREMELY unlike the other horror stories presented here. The staff was friendly and helpful. I don't speak Spanish other than 'Como estas?' and 'Buenos dias' and I had no problems communicating with the staff. I even shared a laugh with the Front Desk Supervisor upon check-in. The free breakfast is decent and they only suggest a $2.00 tip for their staff (who greeted me promptly, with a smile and a cup of coffee) This place truly is a bargain for South Beach. If you're young, looking for a good time in SoBe, and planning to be out of your room, the Riande is perfect for you.

this place SUCKS

by A TripAdvisor Member

this place is a HOLE in the ground. The FRONT desk was RUDE.The rooms are VERY DIRTY.The place overall is filthy and falling apart. the people that work there are parasites. They feed on the customers, and treat them horrible. There were no towels, the bathrooms were dirty. You have to park 2 blocks away and they don't even tell you. You ahve to pay $20.00 a day.

Great experience

by TripAdvisor Member JohnJohn24

After initially reading reviews of the Riande, I was a bit skeptical. However when I checked in I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms were larger than you avarage south beach hotel room, and were clean. The bathroom was spacious as were the closets, and I found nothing to complain about. The only negative thing I could find about my room was maybe the wall needed a paint job. The front desk was not rude at all. The pool area and bar outside were spotless, and the fact it was right on the beach made it perfect. The only downside I could see from staying there is the elevators can be slow at times, but that is to be expected since I went during a busy week (Memorial Day). Its not the Ritz Carlton, but it is far from a hole in the wall. I would definitely stay there again.

It couldn't have been worse. Fleas on the carpet, a broken and taped down window, skid marks on the walls and stains on the carpet and bedspreads. Add to this a rude front desk, lifts that break down regularly and a pool that closes at 5 p.m. What more do we need to stay. Save yourself much heartache and hassle and stay somewhere else.

Enjoyed our stay

by A TripAdvisor Member

My wife, kids and I stayed at the Riande for one night before our recent cruise, and found the facilities a little dated, but adequate for our needs and a decent value for the money we paid (booked through Expedia for around $89 plus tax). The women at the front desk were very pleasant, and let us check in early at around 1:00 PM, even giving us four free breakfast tickets for the next morning (our kids are 14 and 11). The room was surprisingly large, although the full size beds were small (my son fell out of bed and banged his lip on the table). We found the room clean, with some scuff marks on the walls, but no big deal. The hallway carpet was pretty disgusting with large stains, but again, we were only there for one night, so no big deal. The location is great, an easy walk to Lincoln Road restaurants and shops, and direct access to the beautiful beach. We also enjoyed the pool, very nice and clean with plenty of lounge chairs and tables. Lousy service at the outdoor bar though, I waited for at least 10 minutes at the bar to get served and then both barkeeps disappeared, so I gave up on ordering a drink.
All in all, a fairly pleasant experience. I would stay there again for a one night pre-cruise stay, but would probably not recommend the property if in town for a week long vacation.

Not the most Fantastic hotel, but it will do.

If you looking for a luxurious hotel, with a picturesque view of the swimming pool area and where the staff attend to your every needs in the most courteous manner then don't stay here. The view from our room is the worst I have ever seen from all the hotels I have stayed in in my entire life, as the only thing that we could see is the roof of next doors hotel. The room was a good size though, as there was four of us, but very dingy looking. I was disappointed though that the swimming pool closed at 5.00pm, as my other hotel I stayed in before The Palms South Beach closed their at 11.00pm, which was a much better hotel. If the hotel was a bit more modernised, maybe I would of hung out there a little bit more i.e. swimming pool area, dining etc. but I can honestly say, that I stayed away from the hotel as much as possible, as I did find it a tiny bit dreary and depressing. Me and my 3 friends were shock to find out they only give you 2 tokens per room for their continental breakfast, even though there were 4 of us, what were we suppose to do, 2 people have breakfast and let the other 2 starve?!!!

The man on the tour desk (not the woman who was rude) was very helpful suggesting different types of excursions and Billy the bar tender was a nice person too, as he is great in suggesting clubs to go to.

If you are looking for a cheap, cheerful and somewhere to lay your head while you explore south beach this hotel will do.

Stay Away

by TripAdvisor Member weslyn2002

At first glance, I liked the hotel but then I met the staff. I have several complaints about the way my friends and I were treated during our entire weekend. My first issue started when I called the hotel to inquire about parking availability. I was told that valet parking was an option. At no point during my conversation with the hotel staff, was I told that there was LIMITED parking available. Therefore, based on their information, I rented a car and proceeded to the hotel. I was then told that there were no parking spaces available. I spent hours driving around looking for a parking spot. I was also misdirected by the staff about a nearby garage. That garage was CLOSED. If not for the valet, I would not have been able to park at your hotel. Fortunately, the Shelbourne Hotel would have accommodated my friends and I. I should have made a reservation with them.
I arrived early, around 10am, and knew that check in did not start until later. No consideration was given to the fact that we were guests. Your staff did not at any time try to be accommodating to us. I have traveled often and have stayed in other hotels and this is the worst treatment I have ever received by any hotel staff. Often times, if a guest arrives early and a room is available, she can check in. This was not the case here. I did not understand why I had to wait until 2:45pm to check in when others were allowed to check in before I did. When we checked out of the hotel it was 6am...do you mean to tell me that room 417 would remain empty until 3pm even after it was cleaned.
My other main complaint about the staff is the housekeeping! At times when we asked housekeeping for towels in the hallway, they'd tell us to call housekeeping...excuse me, if I'm not mistaken, that was housekeeping! Whenever we called for towels, it was a problem. There were four people staying in the room but they continuously left only 2 towels. One day we called 5 times before towels were sent. I strongly feel that the towels only came because I finally said it in Spanish. I think that is unacceptable.
I think that the service was horrendous. I complained to the Manager on duty about the parking and check in situation and she was not in the least bit helpful. I cannot stay at a place where I am not treated as a respected customer. I also feel that because I did not speak Spanish I was not treated well. I know that it was such a busy weekend and there were lots of people there, but that is no excuse for the way we were treated.
The rooms were very mediocore....they are small and the bathroom is even smaller. There was not even a clock radio in the room. The TV had about 8 channels and 4 of them were in spanish. The view for the standard room is a pink wall on the left side of the hotel. You can't even see the street.

The plus side is that there is a nice lobby and a nice pool area. There is direct beach access which is a plus. All the nice aneminites do not make up for the fact that the staff is so unfriendly.

Not as bad as other reviewers say!

by A TripAdvisor Member

My mother and I stayed here 2 nights, friday and saturday November 5-6. They have a good location, private beach access, simple, but nice decor. The service was decent, well the valet clerk was hitting on me, so I received excellent service from him. The pool may close at 5pm, but since the sun sets around 5pm anyways, who cares! South beach is so amazing, you shouldn't be cooped up in the hotel!! Overall the hotel was a good experience. We would definitely come back to the Riande Continental!
