where to stay in miami beach? is south beach better? would like to be near beach bars & close to shops etc.

Can't recommend much as I typically stay at the Marriott "in town." There are many "mom and pop" type hotels along the strip of beach that are much less expensive than the name brands.
one suggestion is to get to the News Cafe early, get a street side table and just people watch....

South Beach is great and i reccomend The Loews on the beach. i never even left the hotel ground when I was there. cheers Tommy x

South beach is a stretch of beach front and surrounding streets consisting a few blocks. there are many many hotels along this strip and also full of restaurants.
on the entire length of the beach from 5th street up to 180th street or nearby are hotels of varying types ..
perhaps you could put your budget per night and also the attractions you would like be near.. at south beach you can walk almost everywhere.. if you are a bit up north, you will need a car to get around..

I am not an expert on Miami, but I can tell you where NOT to stay. I found this list of the 10 dirtiest hotels in the United States, and two of them are in Miami (Parisian Hotel and Continental Oceanfront Hotel - avoid these two!!!):

You didn't mention your budget, but the two places I do NOT recommend are the Beachcomber and the Cavalier. Unless their service and level of cleanliness has improved by a stretch, of course (always a possibility, so check their most current ratings on TripAdvisor). Shame 'cause both are excellently located right in the Art Deco district, clubs, shops and yes, the beach. Anything along Collins Ave is basically on the beach though. I did have much better experiences with Essex House - nice hotel with a fabulous location. It is generally around $150/night. Orbitz has a deal on it now. Another one I really liked was Fontainbluau. It's a 4.5 star hotel and is more expensive, but browse around the niche hotel sites for deals. HotelRooms365.com offers 4 nights for the price of 3 for it right now.
