Need help finding a hostel in Miami

by cocoagirl

Hello all, I am travelling to Miami next weekend and am looking for a hostel. I found 6 hostels and was hoping someone with experience could tell me which was the best as far as cleanliness, amenities etc.:

*The Tropics Hotel & Hostel 1550 Collins Ave
*The Clay Hotel 1438 Washington Ave
*Miami Beach Int'l Traveler's Hostel 236 9th Ave.
*San Juan Hotel 1680 Collins
*South Beach Hostel 235 Washington Ave
* HI Miami Beach 1438 Washington Ave

this will be my first time to Miami.

thanks

Have you looked at the reviews on hostelz.com yet?

A friend of mine stayed at Banana Bungalow, which is one either Collins or Washington, I forget which. It looked like a nice place and was very clean and friendly. I don;t know anything about the other places, though.

Good luck. Hope that helps.

Also, are there hostels in other areas in Miami or just in South Beach?

The very funky Clay is the best of your list. It's address is listed at 1438 Washington but it sits along Espanola Way which is a very nifty block of Spanish Mediterranean buildings filled with shops and restaurants. It’s one short block from Jerry’s Deli which is open 24/7 and another block to Ocean Drive and the beach. (Note your listing for HI Miami Beach has the same address as the Clay)

The Tropics Hotel & Hostel is across the busy Collins Ave from the Royal Palm and the huge Loews complexes. It’s an OK location but the reviews are mixed, though I do like the building.

Miami Beach Int'l Traveler's Hostel on 9th Ave gets mixed reviews also but it’s in a good location with a Rustic Pizza on the Washington end of the building and a block and a half walk to the beach.

The San Juan Hotel is across Collins from the big hotels such as the DiLido, the Delano, and the National. It’s short walk to the beach and a quick stroll to the shops and restaurants on Lincoln Road.

I don’t know much about the South Beach Hostel but it’s address puts it in SoFi (South of Fifth) so you’ll have long walks and will need to use the Electroglide (.25¢ each way runs from 10am until 2am). It’s probably close to some beachfront but you’ll have to ask.

@Rich, thank you so much for all of your information! I think I will pick either the Clay or San Juan Hotel, that is if I end up going this week will all of these pending hurricanes! Thanks again!
