Ladies, Miami Beach is not...
by pulgaron
Ladies, Miami Beach is not generally known for it's shopping but since the fashion model invation in to South Beach a number of specialty boutiques have sprung up all over the Beach. I notice you can find bathing suits and bikinis that do a wonderful job of showing your figure. Dress bikinis believe or not, I notice the tops being worn in the evenings. All kinds of very sexy shoes. Imported leather, and very sexy, boots from south american countries. Most boutiques are along Washington Avenue. Some are along the cross strreets between Washington and ocean. If you like leather there is the Bikers Store across from the Lowes Hotel, at Washington and 16th Street. This place sells stuff with a Harley Davidson theme. It's cool. All these boutiques sell stuff not easy to find anywhere else. So when you get tired of the beach and clubs, go shopping, let him pick up the tab. He'll appreciate your new bikini. In the picture, the South Seas Hotel at 1751Collins Avenue.

Moved down here 9 yrs ago. Started staying at the South Seas Hotel in the early to mid 80s. the staff at the hotel have always been very friendly and helpful (some stayed on after the new owners took over)
I always found it and still do to be the best hotel on collins ave. they were and still are very kid friendly and now with all the new amenities the hotel has to offer we make it a point to stay at least 3 to 4 times per year for 2-3days
so, everyone out go to South Seas and ENJOY the wonderful weather.

My wife and I had never been to the Miami Beach area before and we took a chance on hotels by reading the reviews previously written. We were thrilled with the South Seas Hotel, their staff and the area. The hotel is small, well maintained, with a fresh coat of paint and within walking distance of a variety of cafes and shops. The staff at the motel was great and very attentive to our needs. Everyone was very helpful on showing us how to get around the area and what transportation to use. Though the rooms were smaller than I had anticapated, it really didn't matter. We were only there long enough to sleep and then for about an hour in the afternoon to change clothes. The rooms were nicley kept and we were very impressed with the safe they had in the room (free). Electrical plugs were at a minimun and no coffee pots, no computer data ports, only phone plugs (wireless connection at the pool), we also had asked for a refrigerator for the room but never got one (1st come, 1st serve) . Each morning they had a free continental breakfast of juice, coffee, bagels, toast, cereal and a nice fruit bowl, which we ate overlooking the pool. To get to the beach, all you had to do was walk past the pool and walk out on the beach. Perfect for us. The beach was beautiful and you could rent lounge chairs ($10 each) and an umbrella ($10) if you wanted. You can purchase food and drink on the beach if interested, however we took a cooler with us. A word of caution, though, this section of the beach is top optional and about 25% of the women there were topless, an enviroment some may not want their children exposed to. A short walk to the Lincoln Road Mall, which is a large pedistrian area of shops and outdoor cafes and resturants, a great place for a meal and shopping. Just down the road a few blocks was Ocean Front Drive where many of the upscale restuarants were located and most of your nightclubs. We were completely satisfied with our stay and had a great time. We would definitely go back again to the South Seas.
Would go back again!

We loved it! The hotel is clean and beautiful. The bed was comfy. Staff was sweet and smiling. The location was a few blacks walk to Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive, shopping, but not a noisy place at all. The hammock area was tranquil, heated pool very peaceful. We would go back !
A honey for the money
by TripAdvisor Member SanAntonioR
I've stayed in several hotels in South Beach, and for the money, this one's a honey. It's an old deco structure...not the most unusual in town by any meas...that's been recently remodeld. It's got a stark, chi-chi white lobby and a pool area out back that could be right out of the 1940s (in a good, cruise-ship way). Rooms have been simply but chicly redone in what you might call beachy boutique hotel style---think big headboards which "porthole" trim and dramatic azure carpeting. Nice bath products in the rooms, an area with hammocks in coconut trees and a decent FREE breakfast make this the best deal on the beach. You really don't have to sacrifice style or comfort here for the money..honest! We paid $99 a night for a BIG room, and it was quiet, clean and hip. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat....
I didnt want to go home.....

We just spent a week at the South Seas, and had a wonderful time! This was the first vacation I wasnt happy to get home from! First of all, the service is impecable, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Our room was just a standard, very nice king size bed, crisp white linens, white down comforter, and six pillows. Very tastefully decorated, without all the floral prints you often see in Florida Hotels. The bathroom was small but very cute with white ceramic tile with turquoise trim, plush white towels, and great water pressure. The pool was incredible, very lushly landscaped, well kept and clean. The lounge chairs had very nice pads on them, and plenty of towels are provided.
When you wander off the property towards the beach you walk through a little Palm Tree garden with hammocks hung in between the trees, this ended up being one of my favorite afternoon hangouts, it has a perfect view of the ocean yet is very quite and tranquil. The restruant on the property also has very wonderful food, I would recommend the Blackened Shrimp Salad as a perfect poolside lunch. They serve a wonderful complimentary breakfast every morning, and if you want something extra, eggs, hashbrowns and bacon are available for a nominal charge. Also to be noted, the coffee is wonderful! For those who prefer something more they do have a cappucino/espresso machine available at the bar. The Bar, very generous with their liquor, Happy Hour is 4-8, 2 for 1, definatley not to be missed! As for the location, we didnt rent a car, and I was very glad as traffic and parking are a real nightmare. You are right in the middle of South Beach, 2 blocks from Lincoln Road, with all the luxury you can afford in both shopping and dining experiences. BUT there are also several fast food options and a Walgreens very close by. This was a great trip, and we will definately return every year to the South Seas! Thanks to everyone there!
The South Seas is a great deal!

My friend and I just got back from 4 nights at the South Seas. The hotel ended up being a really nice surprise, and a great value. We both ended up being very pleasantly pleased with our choice.
Our room was a decent sized standard with two double beds. We were given a standard with a king sized bed, but after calling to the front desk, they gave us no problems in changing the room to the standard with the two double beds. The rooms are very clean, with nice new white down comforters on each bed.
The bathrooms are a bit on the small side, but it never felt unmanageable.
The room smelled fresh (not musty as some critics have said), and the A/C was strong but not noisy.
The pool was great---with lots of fresh towels whenever we needed them.
Loved the hammocks, but spent more time on the beach.
The location was also a bonus. Really close to all of the great restaurants at the Lincoln Road Mall, and if you want something less upscale, there were fast food choices close by, as well as a Walgreen's drugstore.
Our only complaint was that the service at the continental breakfast was VERY slow due to high volume and being understaffed.
All in all I would recommend the South Seas to anyone.
South Seas A great find

We recently stayed at the South Seas and had read many reviews when we were selecting a hotel. We were really happy with our stay and would highly recommend it. The hotel is reasonably priced, in a great location and is customer friendly. The staff were very nice, the food was good and the rooms although small, were modern, clean and more than adequate. The pool is very tropical (not small) with beach access and hammocks. There is a private sun deck and pool bar/ restaurant. Both food and drinks are good as well. Give it a try and you will be happy with your choice. Short walk to everything and service with a smile.

Interesting or Unique Lodging in Miami/Miami Beach areas
by DJStarr
Hey all,
Don't laugh... but I don't swim, and as a redhead, I avoid the sun - so a pool or beach isn't a priority. Need 2 nights lodging 12/25-27, and would appreciate any suggestions for lodging. B&B might work - more concerned with it being quiet, and with a nice loungy roof garden or terrace or balcony/view - than a pool. Near good food, interesting walks (love architecture, history, gardens)
Tips?
Thanks,
DJ Starr

DJ, I know you posted for Miami Beach but you sound like you were made to stay at The Miami River Inn. This place is located in Miami not Miami Beach. But it is a special place for the traveller. Give it a look at http://www.miamiriverinn.com/index.php and let me know what you think.
In the mean time I'll kepp looking for you in the Miami Beach area.

If you are looking for a room in a great location (Art Deco District!) with good food and drink, nice pool, palm garden and lounge area, then South Seas Hotel with decent prices might be the one for you.
