the tiny town of micanopy is located about 10 miles south of gainesville on US441. micanopy began was a seminole indian vilage named cuscowilla. the village was discovered by the explorer and naturalist, william bartram in 1774. he named the village micanopy after it's seminole chief. in 1821 a fort was built in micanopy during the second seminole war. in more recent times micanopy was the setting for two hollywood movies, "cross creek" (1983) and "doc hollywood" (1991). today micanopy is known for it's interesting historic district and it's numerous antique stores. the payne's prairie state nature preserve is located near the town of micanopy. micanopy is well worth the one mile detour when traveling on I-75.
