originally called the elfin river the dora canal was dredged in the 1880's. this beautiful one mile waterway connects lake dora with lake eustis. on the banks of the river you will see florida wildlife and 2,000 year old cypress trees. part of the famous movie "the african queen" was filmed on the dora canal. there are boat tours of lake dora and the dora canal departing from the lakeside inn.
In the year 1591, an exploratory expedition under El Capitan Don Eduardo Juan Pedro Luis Martin Del Guacamole y Zanhoria discovered the area while searching for the Fountain of Youth for Ponce De Leon. Don Eduardo named the town for his fiancée, Dona Maria Teresa Conchita Montalban Y Dorotea (Mt. Dora to her close friends).
OK...you get the idea...none of this is true,,,,but is a fun place. the burgers are great and they have an all-u-can-eat taco bar and plenty of booze.
mount dora is a charming town in lake county florida. the town was settled by david simpson in 1874 on lake dora. lake dora was named after dora ann drawdy an early settler. in 1880 the town was named royellou by the postmaster ross tremain. in 1883 the town was renamed mount dora after lake dora. lake dora's economy was dominated by the citrus industry until the freezes of the 1980's. also since the late 1800's the mount dora area has been known for it's excellent bass fishing. now mount dora is on the edge of the orlando urban sprawl and is a popular weekend getaway for visitors from the orlando area. mount dora hosts numerous good restaurants, bars, and B&Bs. a nice place to visit when in central florida.
The largest of the wading birds in this area, the GREAT BLUE HERON can reach up to four feet in height and has a grey-blue body and a navy blue stripe above its eye. Its beak is gray-black and its legs are green-yellow to blue in color.
Smaller than the Great Egret, the SNOWY EGRET has a white body and black legs. Its beak is black with some yellow beneath the eyes, and it has bright yellow feet called "yellow snippers".
