Days Thunderbird Beach Resort was a great value. We did not expect much when we booked a room for about $80 a night in North Miami Beach. We were certainly satisfied with our choice. The view from the patio (see picture) was beautiful with a gorgeous beach and plenty of palm trees. Pool looked nice but we did not get in.
This is one of the few remaining beachfront low rise hotels in Sunny Isles. The area is being taken over by highrises such as Trump Towers. I would not want to be in the area when these buildings were even half full. The traffic would be a nightmare. Luckily, in the beginning of May, they are all deserted.
Resort had a great location. Fast food, convenience store and a Publix across the street. French restaurant and beachfront bar were in the hotel.
The hotel was everything we needed with a kitchenette, tables and chairs, comfortable beds and good shower but very, very dated. There were only two problems we ran into. First, the "pool staff" was not helpful and very grumpy. He refused to rent beach umbrellas to anyone. He said it was too windy. It was not any more windy than any other time I have been on the beach with an umbrella. You could see beach umbrellas at all the other hotels and resorts. But this may be why they did not charge us the $8 per day resort fee. They did provide us with padded loungers that you usually have to pay for at other places. Second, the patio area above the restaurant had almost no lights. There were three steps down from lobby level to room level. There were no warning signs and the staff did not warn us. My friend fell but luckily was not injured. Parking was $8 per day and across the street.
Great view from patio.
Great to have Publix across the street when you have a kitchenette.
