Food shopping away from the tourist traps
by vt38
We are going to be in Orlando for a week in a month's time. Can anyone suggest non-tourist supermarkets where we can stock up on food for packed lunches and snacks. We will stay at a hotel at Buena Vista and will have car.

Google Maps is very helpful. Just enter "supermarkets, Lake Buena Vista, FL" and you'll see several Super Targets, Publix,Winn-Dixie, and a Wal-Mart Super Store, amongst others.

Publix Supermarkets is one of my favorites and are usually found in your more suburban areas (and Buena Vista has those, believe it or not). Not sure if you are on more of the Kissimmee or Orlando side of things, but either way, there is a Publix near both. Check out www.publix.com and on the top right of the page is their store locator.
Publix features a full deli, bakery, produce market, flowers and pharmacy not to mention your basic aisles of staples and frozen goods. And they are usually open until 10 or 11p. It is our Florida trademark store, so they go big time out of their way to please. You'll appreciate it.
Suprisingly, Wal-mart, has stepped up to the plate with their SuperCenters and are competing with Publix for that "neighborhood market" feel. But in Buena Vista - even "church" has a touristy feel...what can I say? But I think you will be more than satisfied with one of the two.
Goodings is another chain in the area - but it feels like a giant 7-Eleven to me every time I'm forced to stop in for snacks before hitting Islands of Adventure at Universal. Based upon your posting, I think Publix is your best choice. Having a car to get around will allow you freedom of navigation and there are plenty of locations in the Orlando/Kissimmee area so check out their website.
Happy travels!!

Are you worried that super markets closer to Disney World will charge more? These stores are all chain stores and have flyers printed for the whole area, they won't surcharge because of their location.
Do you have a car? In my experience there is a supermarket every mile or closer in an American City. Most strip malls are anchored by one and they are every where.
Have a nice trip
Travel Tips for Orlando
Space yourselves

Orlando has so much to offer and it is very tempting to try and do everything as quickly as you can. Accept that it is unlikely that you are going to do everythin in one trip.
My main tip is for people with younger families. If you can, get a four day hopper or a Universal 7 or 14 day pass. This allows to you to and fro from the parks.
We got there first thing inthe morning, left about 2pm to go back to our villa for a snooze and a cooldawon by the pool. Then we either returned to the same park or a different one for the evening activities. This kept the children, and us, refreshed enough to enjoy all the events and rides The sunshine! Living in London, I am envious of the constant sunshine!
Seeing the children's face when they saw the Spectromagic parade for the first time. True awe and wonder!

Ok went visiting disney thier's a few things to remember. first if you travel thier in july months antisapate larger crows! gentrally diseny is very crowed year round, but in summer months are thier peak season, so expect to pay more in gentral! also don't fight the crowed work around it plan your day with an itinary, but be flexable with it! make dinnind resvations to eat so you don't have long waits in lines at meal times. go the opsite way of the crow like for example WDW magic Kingdom park all the crown seems to head to adventureland first then work thier wat around the park in a clockwise circle. try taking your'e family on a counter clockwise circle around the park! use the fast pass system! what's a fastpass?! well fastpass is a electronic ticket system which gives you a ride time for select attractions so you can get back in line at apionted time on the fastpass ticket and have little or no wait to get on the ride! stay disney by that i mean stay no the resort property thiers perks you get by staying with disney like early amission to theme parks and some nights after closeing disney guest get an extra hour. also free suddle busses and other trans are comptele free to disney guest! so take some of these tips to heart when you visit this world famous family vacation desanation!

Visit the Magic Kingdom, the park for which Disney World is probably most famous. Here you can find the castle that is so often photographed. The park is laid out like a wheel, with the castle at the center, and paths leading out from there to different themes... like the Pirates of the Carribean theme (my favorite area) or Main Street USA, which is a mock representation of a Victorian-looking Main Street from recent American history. This is probably my least favorite of the three parks, but that's not to say it's fun! This park is probably the one most tailored to children, with no real big rides, but instead lots of characters like Mickey Mouse walking around.

Packing List

If you are a 'shop-aholics' like I am, you'll be advised to bring empty luggages & bags to bring back the large varieties of souvenirs & merchandise you'll be so tempted to buy. Of course, the only way to avoid this is not to bring those plastic cards of yours & just enough cash to last through... but, what's the fun of having to restrict oneself on such a wonderful holiday ;-) ! Splash... is the keyword! Walking shoes is a necessity here. Dress casual! Depending on you, for me... all kinds of lenses, many rolls of films, digicam & viewcam!
