Bed and Breakfast Houses
All over America are small places to stay called "Bed and Breakfastes". Usually they are in large homes that have been modified to allow a small number of guests. They are most commonly found in residential areas of towns and cities. The service is very personal and you are made to feel like a visiting friend usually by the actual owners. There are lots of guide books and lists of Bed and Breakfast establishments. Reservations are generally required to be sure to have a place to stay. Some take reservations over the internet others by phone or mail.
These are not cheap, impersonal places to stay. Expect to pay more that you would at one of the nationwide economic hotel chains, but less that you would at a 4 or 5 star luxury place. The unique quality of these places is their utter uniqueness. Some are in historic homes, others have great location and views, but most seem to attract alot of repeat business. I have loved each one I have visited (about a half dozen), and I feel that staying in the bed and breakfast added to the pleasure of my city visit.
