Travel Tips for Ormond Beach

Birthplace of Speed

by grandmaR

When I was 16, we came to Florida and saw Daytona, but we actually spent the time at Ormond Beach which was cheaper and less crowded. There was a hurricane offshore, so the waves and undertow were too great to actually do much swimming though. The sandy beaches are clean and packed so very easy to walk on and yet good for building sand castles.

The next time we came to Ormond Beach was in January when it was really too cold for swimming, but we still saw families on the sand, walkers and also driving is allowed on this beach. The beach is always open and free to pedestrians and bicyclists depending on tides and access ramps being opened.

No vehicles are allowed in the Ormond-By-the-Sea Natural Beach Management area which is from Granada Blvd north to the County Line.
In the Transitional Zone from Granada Blvd south to Seabreeze Blvd, driving is allowed on the east or seaward side of the markers. The Main Street Pier is a Traffic Free Zone While Daytona often gets the credit, Ransom Olds and Alexander Winton were two of the first racers on the hard packed sand of Ormond Beach- dead heating down the beach at 57 MPH. Anderson and Price then organized the first auto races on the beach. By 1904, the Florida East Coast Automobile Association boasted 200 members.

At present the beach is open to vehicles from sunrise to sunset Nov. 1 through April 30 and from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., May 1 through Oct. 31. There is a $5 per day per vehicle user fee to drive on the beach February 1 through November 30.

Season beach passes are $20 for Volusia County residents and $40 for non-residents. Daily and seasonal passes may ONLY be purchased at the tollbooths

Historic Ormond - Number "9" Plantation

by grandmaR

Chauncey Bacon, a Connecticut Yankee who wore a top hat and was known as "The Duke", build his third house here from mahogany logs rescued from the wreck of the City of Vera Cruz. The grounds of the house were the site of many huge parties.

His citrus plantation, which he began in 1876 had 172 acres from the river to the ocean. The products - jams, jellies and marmalades were famous worldwide.
