Travel Tips for Palatka

Is Palatka one of those WOW places to visit?

by melosh

> No way! There are probably thousands of poor towns like Palatka
> although none exactly the same. It does have its history that is on an
> American scale of hundreds of years. In fact it once was the second largest
> city in Florida with some large tourist hotels, but evidence of this
> 'grandeur' is minimal.
> There is a sense of place, because it has not been engulfed by a large
> urban center, and it has a nice location being within easy drive of a
> number of northern Florida attractions (None of which are actually a
> WOW.) The people are probably friendlier than average and I have always
> been impressed by how much philanthropic generosity is evident.
> Its culture is kind of "Southern USA light". A small town, but really
> open and accepting of outsiders.
> It has become my hometown. If you come this way I would be happy to
> show you around. My best memory of Palatka is when it awarded the "keys to the city" a couple weeks after the 9/11 attack to a Muslim physician of many years service. I felt that the fact that it was our Afro-American-Christian-Minister Mayor who presented the award at a time when there was a degree of national hysteria said something special about the place where I had chosen to live. Since then I have always been proud to say that Palatka is my hometown.

palatka is a small town located on the st. johns river south of jacksonville and west of saint augustine florida. palatka is the county seat of putnam county florida. the original inhabitants of the palatka area were the timucuan native american tribe. they were replaced by the seminoles who called the area pilo-taikita, (crossing over). in 1767 denys rolle established rolletown and a plantation in present day east palatka. in 1783 he moved his live stock and slaves to exuma island in the bahamas. during the second seminole war fort shannon was built in present day downtown palatka in 1835. palatka was incorporated in 1853 and was a popular winter tourist attraction until the out break of the civil war. in 1862 the USS cimarron shelled downtown palatka and union troops occupied the town. most of the residents of palatka fled the town and did not return until the end of the war. after the civil war palatka's winter visitors returned to the area and it was a thriving tourist town up to the turn of the 20 th century. today much of palatka's economy is still dependant on winter tourists.
