It's quite obvious to anyone who has walked one of the Emerald Coast's beaches that the sand here is among the whitest,cleanest and softest in the world. What you may not know,however, is that when you walk
on the beaches here, you're actually walking on the mountains-the Appalachian Mountains, that is. The sand of beach is comprised mainly of quartz washed
down from the mountains by teh Apalachicola River,
160 miles east of Pensacola Beach.It is this quartz, ground to a perfect oval in each grain of sand, that makes the beach 'squeak' when you walk on it.
Normally, such quartz has a rosy pink tint because of
its iron oxide coating but the sugary-white quartz teh Emerald Coast lost its coating somewhere along its watery journey thousand of years ago.No one knows exactly how or why.
What scientist do know, however, it that erosion of these beautiful sugar-sand beaches can be prevented.

navarre beach is a small beach town about 8 miles east of pensacola beach on santa rosa island. navarre beach has a very nice county park and a section of the gulf islands national seashore. navarre beach is a very nice gulf beach to visit because it is not as crowded as pensacola beach.
from pensacola beach take gulf blvd east to navarre.

They prepare authentic Italian Italian not Italian American food at this ristorante. The owner is from Sicily. It is a charming little restuarant on Seville Square with just a few tables. The food is very good and the waitstaff (the owner's son, when I was there) was very nice and efficient.

I haven't been there in two years so prices may not be as stated below. It's not terrifically expensive.

A once nice place, the Hong Kong restaurant is now a cheap all you can eat buffet. The place is a bit run down, however for only 8.25 USD, you can enjoy a wide varity and your drinks are included. Beer and adult beverages are extra. Be sure to go dinner peak lunch hours to ensure food is fresh and not out under the heat lamps a long time. Nice Chicken and mushroom with fresh vegetable.
