pompano beach is a small town about 15 minutes north of fort lauderdale. it is very quiet, and the beach was not crowded when i was there.
one thing to be cautious about -- numbered STREETS run east and west, numbered AVENUES run north and south.
it is difficult to tell where pompano beach and the towns nearby begin and end in relation to fort lauderdale itself. please also see my separate fort lauderdale page, and my miami beach page ("restaurants" tips for miami beach, related to my "off the beaten path" tips for fort lauderdale).
