Travel Tips for Punta Gorda

Charlie's Winds

by doolemma

Charlie's winds were over 130 miles per hour when it hit the city so even permanent homes, office buildings, and shopping centers were not spared. In the corner of this picture is a home covered with a blue tarp as it's roof is damaged but livable. Blue is now a very popular color for roofs in this hard hit city.

Small town Punta Gorda

"A great place to live - off season..."

I love the small town living, in the summer when the "snowbirds" are gone. I realize that they keep the local economy afloat, but they also make it impossible to get into restaurants without a 2 hour wait. They drive like they are the only ones on the road. They prevent year round residents from getting campsites anywhere in the state in the fall, winter & spring..... the best time to camp.
Aside from that, it's a great place. There are great shops, and restaruants downtown. A great new marina or two. A sunset view from Gilchrist Park that can't be beat. Thursday nights bring the "guitar army" out in force at Gilchrist Park. Many artsy types have their winter homes here, too, keeping the local galleries full.

Tropical Steve's Homeport

"Jimmy Buffet Eaten Alive by Developers!"

Gulf Coast Florida has great weather...great waters...ocean and rivers...great beaches...great birding...lots to do. Charlotte County was undiscovered when we came here eight years ago...but the developers have arrived. If only the oil wells would run dry, the real estate bubble would burst, the phosphate miners would go away, and the Okechobee dikes would break and wash Miami into the ocean!
Come for a visit before it looks like plastic (faux Mediterranean) Naples. Enjoy the beaches...Siesta, Venice, Ft Desoto...do some world class flats and tarpon fishing...go birding at Ding Darling Refuge or Myakka State Park. Catch some great sunsets on the Gulf and don't forget to take in the 'Guitar Army" on Thursday nights in Gilcrest Park in Punta Gorda.
