St Augustine
by shdw100
The fort was my favorite thing, probably because it was the only thing that we saw! Definately need to get back to Florida to see more of it. I don't know if this is a fondest memory, but the drive across the Florida panhandle was very, how should I put this, BORING! I thought driving across Kansas was bad, but Florida is right up there if you drive along the interstate. I have heard if you drive along the coast, it's pretty. Learned that lesson the first time, will not repeat it again in the future!
Backwater Kayaking
by frankcanfly
Go to Devil's Elbow Marina, about 10 miles south of St. Augustine Beach, and rent a Kayak. There are plenty of backwater islands to explore. Be aware of the tidal flow though, or you could be fighting an ebb tide back to the marina.
Mr. Flagler built this place
by spartan
As a result of his interest, he built the magnificent Ponce de Leon and Alcazar Hotels. Flagler also purchased the newly constructed Casa Monica Hotel, renaming it the Hotel Cordova. With these openings, the wealthy and fashionable flocked to St. Augustine, soon to become known as the "Southern Newport."
Flagler purchased the surrounding railroads at the same time as he started his hotels, marking the beginning of the Florida East Coast Railroad. Eventually, he extended it down the east coast of Florida, first reaching Palm Beach, and then Miami in 1896.

Local recommendation
by BLewJay about Conch House
After walking around the fort, Flagler College and the old part of St. Augustine, we decided to get something to eat. So we went into the Visitors Center and asked for a recommendation...she said go to the Conch House. What we found was a restaurant right on the marina, great food and top notch service. We decided to have a cup of Conch Chowder and share appetizers...Conch Fritters (a Conch House specialty, served with Key Lime Mustard sauce) and Florida Gator Tail (Florida gator tail, deep-fried, served with Key Lime Mustard sauce). Of course we had to have a cocktail, so decided to have a Goomsbay Smash (coconut rum, Gosling's rum, 151 Rum, orange juice and pineapple juice).
