Home Base for St. Pete Beach

    by

The Grand Plaza has possibly the longest name ever for a hotel. It is one of the main hotels in the middle of the St. Pete Beach area, and has a diverse set of amenities for you to spend your time. It stands 12 stories tall, the highest of the hotels, which means 9 floors of rooms, with rooms of partial to full views of the sandy beaches. The rooms are simple, and somewhat oddly shaped, but have all the necessities of a hotel: large plush beds, air-conditioning, 32" TV, small fridge and coffee machine, free wi-fi.

The hotel has 3 restaurants for patrons, 2 of which I visited during my stay. Bongo's is on the sandfront, a casual place for burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Spinner's is on the top, and is a claim to fame for the resort. It has a rotating floor that slowly takes you around, so you can see Tampa and the Gulf of Mexico. It has a more extensive menu and full bar and desserts.

In addition to all this, the Grand Plaza has information and connections to help you enjoy your stay even more. Whether it is parasailing on the water, planning a trip to downtown St. Petersburg, or just looking for a place to eat out side, the concierge service was friendly and full of ideas for us, a good resource.

Don't be too critical!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

The last time we were at the Holiday Inn, St. Pete Beach, was last August (2004). We are booked for a stay there May of this year.
It always amazes me to read bad reviews of this hotel. So, let me say this - If you are looking for a relaxing vacation, with great service, and a very friendly staff, stay here. If you are an overy-critical, microscope carrying, health inspector, don't stay here!
Folks, this is a hotel, not an operating room. If you have any problems with your stay, just let the staff know. It has been our experience that any issues will be remedied. We would certainly recomend this hotel for families, singles, or couples wanting to get away for a few days.
The staff has always made sure our vacation was great. We have stayed here numerous times and have only been disappointed on the day we had to leave. The food is good, the bar drinks are tastey, and the atmosphere is incredible. Maybe it's not the most modern hotel on the beach, but if you are spending enough time in the room to tear apart the A/C unit, to look for mold, then you have missed the idea of a Florida vacation!!
If you are a snobby traveller......stay at the Don Cesar! See you in May..........at the Holiday Inn!!

Progressively worse

by TripAdvisor Member New2it2000

We have been going to St. Pete Beach for the past 6 years. In the beginning we stayed at the Holiday Inn on Gulf Blvd. This particular hotel throughout the years has gone from nice to filthy. My last stay there, the room had an empty bottle of vodka behind the nightstand, the airconditioner is located 6 inches from bed, I asked to have the bed changed because it wasnt when we arrived and housekeeping left me a pile of sheets to do it myself. A little kid had an accident in the pool and pool maintanence casually scooped it with a net and didnt close the pool to shock it. I would never stay there again. Dont let the name "beach resort" fool you. The only thing nice about this place is the beach that it is on.

Never Again!

The day after we checked in, housekeeping didn't knock on our door until after 4:00 p.m., and we were getting ready for a 5:30 p.m. wedding on the beach. I said not to bother cleaning the room, but I would like clean glasses and wash cloths and the garbage emptied. The girl told me they didn't offer clean glasses; they would give us dishwashing liquid for us to wash them. The rooms were not very clean; the common areas downstairs were worse. There was a bad smell--like mold--throughout the hotel. The elevators were slow or broken. I will say that the wedding reception penthouse room was beautiful.

not that bad

We stayed at the Holiday Inn on St. Pete Beach over 4th of July 2005. The location is great and we were very happy with the service. They went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of. The beds were very comfortable with extra pillows and sheets. We dined at the rooftop restaurant. Great view, pretty good food. The hotel was pretty clean, but you could definately tell that it needed some extra scrubbing. Overall, I would say the service is above average and the hotel average.

Smelly mold

by A TripAdvisor Member

I paid $160 a night, what a mistake. The hallways are hot and smell like mold. The pool is dirty, probably because it's small has a lot of guests. The room air conditioner smells like mold.
Some rooms are currently undergoing construction, conditions may be better next year.

Loved it

Stayed in Room 804 for 3 nights in the middle of a 2 week package deal to Orlando, we had the cheapest room available at $89 per night (includes free parking) which is a bay / car park view rather than facing onto the beach. The room was nice & clean with 2 massive beds (we have King size at home & they were way bigger), big TV, fridge & coffee maker. There is also a balcony with a small table & chairs which is nice and I believe all rooms have these. The bathroom is quite small but not the end of the world. There is some noise from the corridor area and adjacent rooms and we were there when it was quiet so perhaps a consideration during a busy time. The pool area is quite small and is a little deep for small children but just a few steps down and you are right onto the beach.

The beach and Gulf Waters are just sensational, a real treat, it feels literally like paradise. We also went down the road a bit to Pass A Grille beach for a couple of hours one day but did not think it was as nice, lots more shells etc. under your feet and lots of seaweed.

We sat two evenings in the hotel's beachfront bar "Bahama Mama's" watching the sunset with a couple of guys doing Neil Young, Eagles etc. just great. As was the Grouper sandwich meal, a local favourite around this area and I can see why.

The final night we went up to the hotel's rooftop restaurant "Spinners", beautiful place that actually slowly revolves round 180 degrees, great food, great beer & wine & a fantastic sunset, great spot !!

Previous reviews have used words like smelly, moldy, dirty, things broken etc, I can honestly say we never found anything like that and wondered if we had checked into a different hotel !!

Would recommend this to anyone for a short break.

Great spot for a stopover

by TripAdvisor Member AlwaysReady2Go

My wife and I spent three nights here 16-19 Oct 2005 and had a great time doing nothing but lazing by the beach and pool.

Prime beachfront location - literally steps from a picture-postcard beach. And what sunsets - absolutely glorious. Small but quiet pool area (pool is quite deep at 8ft in places) and Bahama Mama's bar with live music - provided a real holiday feel to the location.

Stayed in room 410 - bayside with partial (but not sunset) beach view - for $84 a night plus tax. Rooms have been recently remodelled so they are fresh and clean. Some work still ongoing at the hotel so there is occasional - but not obtrustive - noise during the day. Very quiet at night.

A very '70's style hotel from the outside - but within easy walking distance to a couple of steakhouses, bars and a Publix/Shopping Center about 5 mins walk down the street - good for stocking up on some basic items to keep in the in-room fridge and helps keep overall costs down too!

Overall area felt safe and quiet. Good car parking on site.

Tiled floors now throughout hotel and a small but clean bathroom (tho' the a/c in the bathroom was very noisy). Made for a very good 'beachy' feel to the accomodations.

Had a meal in the Spinners Restaurant - great NY strip steak and price not bad for a hotel dinner.

Would definitely stay here again for a couple of nights or so next time I'm in the area. St Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota and Tampa all within a reasonable 30-45 minutes drive if you want to explore further - although the beach and those sunsets are hard to pull away from!

Beach cabanas (at $17 dollars a day) are a little pricey - but hey, you're on holiday and they do offer peace and privacy right on all that fantastic sandy beach. Pedaloes and parasailing are also available on site.

Pros: location, location, location - right on a beautiful white sand beach.

Cons: None really - although the area is reasonably quiet compared to the excitement of Orlando so a few days R&R here might be all you need.

Nice rooms, friendly staff

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed in hotel for 4 nights.
I found the hotel on line and was a little worried because of some of the negative reviews. The front desk staff was fantastic, friendly and very accommodating. Especially professional and kind was the lady with a Swedish accent.
Our room was fine and we had a great view for a standard hotel room.
We loved the romantic sunsets, and wide soft sanded beach. We will be back and thanks for a beautiful get away.

Holiday Inn Grand Plaza, Great Place

by TripAdvisor Member kotsoj

This place is great!!! Previous reviews scared me but that is not what I experienced. Apparently the hotel has been extensively remodelled and just about finished. The theme is a casually sophisticated boutique look. There is no smell and nothing broken down. Everything is new in the rooms and the hotel. The staff has obviously been retrained and are there to serve you. I know that they did take care of us. The location directly on the beach is superb and can't be beat. The food at both of their beach bar and rooftop revolving restaurant was fabulous. The view from up above was awesome. Would stay there again when visiting that area.
