If you're looking for the self-proclaimed "only luxury resort" on Florida's Gulf Coast, book a room at the Renaissance Vinoy in St. Petersburg. Centrally located, its just nearby downtown. The high tech resort has in-room high speed internet access. It's right on Tampa Bay, complete with a private marina. Now how's that for luxurious? Indulge yourself, if this is your cup of tea.
Within walking distance of downtown St. Petersburg and The Pier.

Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club
Unique Quality: The showplace of St. Petersburg's scenic waterfront, the 360-room Renaissance resort recalls the style and glamour of another era. Overlooking sparkling Tampa Bay and surrounded by lush grounds, this opulent resort has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Vinoy Park Hotel, also known as the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club, was constructed in 1925, and it was one of the most glamorous hotels in the area. Like many other big hotels, it was taken over by the army during World War II and used as a training school.
The 375-room hotel was renovated in 1992 and is one of the finest hotels on the Florida Gulf Coast. Rooms typically run $150 to $250 a night at this waterfront hotel with its own private marina, 18-hole golf course and 12-court tennis complex.
A GEM

Had a " GOLF PACKAGE" at "THE VINOY". Super staff and a most enjoyable room with hot tub. Their golf course is very professional and far above average in every way. The Terrace Room is excellent for dining. They recommended "THE OYSTER BAR" for a great seafood dinner. THE OYSTER BAR is walking distance from the vinoy but their driver will take you there and pick you up. THE OYSTER BAR is a most wounderful experience. Fantastic food and a fantastic staff. You must not leave the area without a trip to the "OYSTER BAR". The mussels and clams are a must. We plan to return.

Worth going to St Petersburg for this hotel alone

Fantastic. I just love this place. It has such a great feel to it. The hotel location is great - right by the marina and an easy pleasant walk to downtown. They run a shuttle to the Vinoy golf course - a great course with amazing wildlife - I have attached some photos of the spectators we had! We had dinner in Marchands restaurant and in the Terrace room (same thing really) - an excellent dining room and a great bar. Very light and classical. The place has an old colonial feel to it. A great vacation.
Great Balcony Views

In town for a sad occasion- my father's funeral. However the highlight was staying at Vinoy for first time ever. What a nice treat! Definetlely the best in St. Petersburg! Really like the new section, especially the balcony views of harbor. Hospitality suite has a very nice patio! Great service and details. Lovely Sunday brunch. Enjoyed the buzz of crickets while rocking on the porch in the evening... the palms, sunsets and lazy pace reminds me of the St. Petersburg I moved to in 1956. Glad this vinatge hotel is renovated and renewed to be a wonderful jem.
Relaxing, Relaxing, Relaxing

The Vinoy offered what my husband and I needed for a quick get away, rest, golf and the spa. Is it the most happening place? No, you don't go to St. Pete for happening times. I am a young 40 year old that enjoys the W and the 'Boutique' hotel experience. The Vinoy offers a hotel in a country club setting. Proper dress is required after 5 pm, resort wear abounds and cocktails are freely poured. The service is excellent, although the valets are a little snobby. They seem to run to the most expensive cars. Pull up in your rented Galant and you might wait for service. But once inside you are treated as equal. The rooms are a little small but very comfortable, the bathrooms are nice but they could upgrade the shower heads. My one complaint is the bed. It was uncomfortable for me and my spouse. But we survived. Parking is $9 self park, $13 valet. I recommend the Golf Escape package. A round of golf for two on what my husband says is a NICE golf course, $25 meal credit and if you don't golf, like me, $88 spa credit. A good spa. It worked for us. The hotel is right off of Vinoy Park and the Marina. A great area for biking and walking. There was even a free concert in the park while we were there. We ate at a great Mexican restaurant called Red Mesa. The conciege can give you directions. The hotel is in a good location, close to the highway, not far from Tampa. Watch your street signs, its easy to get a little confused in St. Pete...There a numbered streets and avenues. The hotel is on 5th Ave....just don't get it confused with 5th Street. Have fun and relax!
New Year's in St. Pete

We arrived at the Vinoy at 4 p.m. check in time to find our room was not ready. They offered us complimentary drinks at the bar which we saved for later, checked our bags and went off to explore the marina and beautiful parks. We had an early dinner and returned at 6:00 to once again be told our room wasn't ready. We used the second complimentary drink cards and sat on the large front porch watching the well dressed guests arrive for several weddings. The front desk folks apologized extensively and said they had several big groups who left late. We had expected some glitches over New Years and we were enjoying the scene. The hotel sent up a complimentary candy and nut tray to thank us for being understanding which was nice. Our suite overlooking the harbor in the new part of the hotel had two balconies - from the living room and from the bedroom. The rooms were large and well appointed although not luxurious. On New Year's Eve we had a picnic dinner on the balcony and enjoyed the childrens' fireworks at 8:30, went to bed and woke up for the much louder and longer fireworks at midnight. It was a fun New Years if you want to enjoy the fireworks, good food, good quality champagne and each other's company without having to deal with drunks, crowded restaurants and exorbitant prices. We'll return to the Vinoy and St. Petersburg.

Tampa bay or Gulf of Mexico
by bozyil
I am going to a conference at the Renaissance Vinoy in October and wish to stay elsewhere.I will be there for six days which gives me some pure vacation time before and after the conference.I am not sure whether to stay on the Gulf side and drive over or to stay nearby the hotel.I would like to be able to rent a jet-ski once and to sail a laser or hobie in the sea.
Is there any special place to snorkel ?
Are there any beaches which have sailboats on the sand to rent ?
How long does the drive across take to St. Pete's beach from the tampa bay side?
Are there any nice beaches on the Tampa bay side?
Thanks for any advice.

The Vinoy is a wonderful hotel and in a great area--on the water, close to Baywalk, relatively close to the Dali Museum, etc.
Yes, you could go to a gulf-front hotel and your morning/evening commute would not be much more than 20 minutes depending on where you decide.
The entire Tampa area can be vibrant or laid back depending on what you want.
You will probably visit John's Pass where there is a board of shops and restaurants and tourist-related information & services including jet skis, etc.
Snorkeling is just OK in the area but there is a boat that goes to Ft. DeSoto and to Egmont Key were some snorkeling can found.
The best beaches on the Tampa Bay side are on the east side which is an hour drive from ST. Pete in the Ruskin area.
