More about Sunset Beach Resort
This is a great place
This is a wonderful place. Our family of four (two adults, two teens) stayed there for 4 days. The room was clean and comfortable, with complete kitchen, stove microwave and fridge, dining table and utensils. Many channels on the TV. There was a nice, screened-in porch. The pool and beach were lovely and outstanding. The area is quiet --older people and families, not rowdy spring break types. The staff was efficient, available and helpful. We made good use of the bikes and the continental breakfast. Beautiful nature areas close by.
We stayed at Sunset Beach mid-April. Had the sunrise-view room, which
is described as farther away from the road and more toward the beach.
Motel-like from the outside--must be quite old, but the rooms have been done very nicely. Purples and greens and neutrals. Bed has a down comforter. Bathroom nice too though tub needs grouting touch-up. Free continental brkfst is croissants, bagels, muffins and donuts, coffee and juice. Some fruit would be nice. They run low on selection the later you wait.
The free bikes are convenient but get out there early (by 9) or you'll have slim pickins. Nice beach, water was great. Free use of chairs; if you want one of their 3 umbrellas be out early. Large heated swimming pool. Screened-in balcony in every room that faces the pool.
There is no restaurant on the premises. There is a laundry facility on the lower level near the pool.
Antonio and Liz were very helpful from assistance with whom to call to go sailing to offering to print our boarding passes upon check-out.
Oceanfront rooms: There appear to be only two, and though they're pretty close to the beach, there's a gravel parking lot between these
rooms and the beach.
The whole bldg seemed to rattle when people slam their doors. Also we had people in the room next to us the last night and you can hear them somewhat.
I would stay here again and I would recommend this resort to others, though at high season when it is fully booked I'm not sure I'd want to be there. There are many other hotels and condos on this island to check out too.
All in all a great vacation at a nice resort.
Want to give this place a 1........
.....just to keep it a secret!!
Our family of 6 really enjoyed our several day stay in one of the suites. We will be back again and again.
Like the others have said, great beach location, big pool, clean, all kitchen appliances (including pans, glasses and dishes), excellent customer service, quiet relaxing island with nice selection of restaurants.
Try renting a boat and fishing in Tarpon Bay ;)
There is something down to earth and nostalgic about this old (and now renovated) Best Western. Unassuming and relaxing. Kid friendly.
Coconut, Pine and White Sand
The south shore of Sanibel Island along West Gulf Drive is lined with beachfront lodging facilities. What’s remarkable about any of these properties is how they blend in with the natural landscape of this meticulously preserved island. In fact, it’s as if they’ve been cautiously hidden from view, not only from the road but from one another. Thanks to Sanibel’s restrictive commercial planning, it’s possible to stay along this fabulous stretch of coastline, in the company of many fellow travelers, and still feel like you’re in one of the last unspoiled places in the Eastern US. Coconut palms and tall pines form the skyline here rather than towering condominiums and high rise resorts.
Sunset Beach Resort is a 46 unit property located right on the beach on Sanibel’s south facing shore. It’s a former Best Western property that, at least structurally, seems better labeled “motel” than “resort”. From the exterior, the building itself is a fairly ordinary structure with two stories, each with units accessible from an external walkway.
But inside our door we were impressed with our unit’s spacious layout and considerable amenities. Our unit had a full kitchen with a sizable dining area, two queen sized beds, a large bathroom and a private, small but pleasant screened patio. Décor was modern and very much up to date. Our room had a great deal of floor space and was extremely comfortable.
The grounds of the Sunset Beach are nicely maintained and feature an impressive, very large heated swimming pool. Landscaping here is simple and unpretentious. Best of all, Sanibel’s signature shell strewn white sand beach is just steps away. This is the kind of place where it’s possible to transition back and forth effortlessly between pool and beach.
A tennis court and complimentary bikes are nice extras as is the complimentary continental breakfast. You should note, as others have commented, that there is no dining facility on site. Sanibel’s commercial district along Periwinkle Way is a five minute drive.
This is a nice place to kick back and enjoy Sanibel’s natural charms for a couple days. You won’t be entertained or waited on here but you’ll feel as though you’ve escaped the mainland to some distant tropical island.
My husband and I decided to take a quick trip to Sanibel and were lucky to find Sunset Beach Resort. It's centrally located on Sanibel Island, but was very quiet and private. The grounds are manicured. Rooms were comfortable and clean. The pool was in great condition. A superb continental breakfast with fresh pastries and good coffee is offered and bikes are free to use by guests.
The beach, of course, was beautiful. The resort is just steps to the sand and guests are welcome to use lounge chairs and umbrellas. Because you're on a private beach, it's quiet and relaxing.
We'll be back!!
Better than I expected! Phew!!
Like most people, I am VERY PICKY when it comes to hotels. My biggest
fear is reserving a room and it is gross (dirty and/or bugs). When you are paying to stay somewhere, my thought is that at a MINIMUM it should be spic-n-span clean. Well, searching online for hotels and reading the reviews is not all that helpful seeing as how most hotels
get mixed reviews and I never know what to expect since they have positive AND negative reviews. So, I relied on luck on this one. Given that the room we reserved was somewhat below ground, I was happy with the cleanliness of it. If you are truly interested in staying at this hotel, ask for the room on the end facing the gulf on the top floor. The grounds were clean and the pool was good-sized.
Lots of chairs for the pool and for the beach. They also supply towels for the pool and beach. It was a very pleasant experience. I would definitely stay there again!
Great Stay on the Beach
We recently stayed at this hotel after reading Trip Advisor reviews, and viewing the hotel website. We were absolutely delighted with our stay. While the outside was very neat and well kept, the facade of the facility was nothing spectacular that would lead you to think that the inside was so nice. Our room was kept impeccably clean and was nicely decorated. The bed was comfortable, and the kitchenette contained everything we needed to prepare light meals. The pool was larger than most, and the beach was just steps from our room. We could easily sit on our screened balcony and view the gulf. The hotel provided complimentary chaise lounges and umbrellas on the beach, and bicycles for touring the island. Continental breakfast of coffee, tea, juice, bagels and danish were offered. Bagels & danish were very fresh. Staff was helpful and professional. They provided many excellent dining recommendations. I wouldn't call this a "resort", but we will definitely stay here again.
Drove to Sanibel for 1 night without reservations at end of June. Some hotels were booked up already and we picked this one randomly, not really impressed with its looks. We were very pleasantly surprised by the room itself - spacious and clean and modern - and by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. We did not use the free bikes, but did eat the free breakfast of very fresh doughnuts/pastries. The beach was a very short walk and chairs/umbrellas were also provided for free. We had no trouble getting one that afternoon. The pool area was nice also. Would definitely stay here again!
Terrible experiance vacation
July 27, 2007 Sanibel Beach Resort terrible vacation.
My reservation for this place was in May and by July they did not sent any conformation. When we arrived only 1 room was left with 1 queen bed ( we are 2 big persons ) ...we request 2 bed.
Desk persons called around , but nothing was possible to found
So we come home after 7 hours drive with tears in our eyas.
Hotel is not really renovated ?? Also we found there rooms 4 steps under ground level for $144 weekends??????
Be careful if you think to go there, even for less expensive vacation.
Could have been better
We arrived on Monday and noticed right away that there was a problem with ants in our room. We had to put any open food in the fridge. The floor was pretty dirty and stained, I didn't feel comfortable letting my kids crawl around on it. The room also smelled heavily of cigarette smoke. The housekeeper was extremely rude! We came up to our room after being on the beach to find her cursing and yelling about how much stuff we had in our room. She also never changed the sheets our entire stay (5 days) nor did she empty our trash on some days. She was very rude to us when we came back to our room and she was there. The beach was nice but the sand fleas are really bad. It was unbareable to be on the beach in the early morning or evening because thats when the fleas are the worst. They also ended up back in our room and by the time we left we were all covered in bites. The area by the pool was swarming with wasps which made it impossible to shower off before getting in. My son was stung twice trying to rinse his feet. There really was not a lot to do around Sanibel. We also did not find any big shells. Even when we paid to take a shelling cruise to a different island we didn't find any. We are natives of Florida (Orlando) and we just were not impressed with Sanibel Island. We went to Ding Darling twice to see wildlife and saw a couple bunnies and raccoons but that was it, no gators or bobcats ect. We won't be going back to Sanibel. The kids were pretty bored and by the time we left they were even tired of the beach. We stayed for 5 days.
