Clean, reasonably priced for the season and place. Right on the beach, good shelling beach too! Has a restaurant on site and kids ate free with paying adult at time of my visit. Also has a smallish pool and a pool bar/snack bar, which was convenient for Pina Coladas and quick bite. I got the best rate when calling Holiday Inn's 800 number, better than Travelocity, Expedia or Orbitz, so shop around. The hotel was about $200 a night for high season, discount price. But be forewarned, they charged me $10 a night extra for a cot, which I don't remember being charged at other hotels.
Unique Quality: Great shelling beach. Another good thing (at least for me because we left the island a lot) was its location near the front of the island.

Been to Sanibel and Captiva several times over the past 10 years. We usually rent a condo for a week during the summer. Needed a quick get away this winter for a long weekend and tried a hotel this time since it wasn't a full week. Read reviews on this site about the Holiday Inn and took the negative ones with a grain of salt. WELL, I book a room 12/18, got the expected rate online for the time of year booked airfare and patiently awaited the day to arrive. We were to leave on Friday 13th (Jan). Never had a problem with that day but something SEEMED too easy about the reservation so I called to confirm the day we were leaving to be told the reservation was cancelled. On top of that the lady (Bonnie, Bobbie..?) at the hotel said it was cancelled in October. After Calling Holiday Inn 800 number and Holiday Inn Guest Relations I was told the reservation was cancelled by the hotel on 12/24, you would think the lady at the hotel would be able to tell this. NO ONE at any of those 3 places (hotel, HI800, or Guest relations) could give me the rate I had booked or reinstate my reservation. The only explanation I got was the card must not have authorized the charge when they tried to charge to it from the guest relations gentleman. No call or email correspondence was made to get a different Credit Card to go through if that really was the issue and they request that info at time of booking online (email and phone). You would think someone could have called to try to fill up 1 more room since the hotel was less than half full. They seemed less than interested in making us happy (we originally booked a King had to settle for 2 queens) and did not honor our original rate.
Bottom line, while the motel was nice, easily accessible, and clean, I wouldn't recommend it. We were not even given an apology for them cancelling the reservation! This isn't my first bad experience with a Holiday Inn, but I can assure you it will be the last time I stay at one.
Oh yeah,
--the toilet ran all night the first night, after 2 calls to get it fixed the next day, it took 20 minutes to fill up the tank each flush...
--When we checked in there were 2 towels hanging on the back of the bathroom door. I'm assuming these weren't extra towels but rather left from previous guests...
--There were King rooms available around us, but I guess rather than making one guest happy they wanted to keep those open JUST IN CASE they had a walkin...
stayed at this place end of jan. for 2 days,and glad i left to move to the west wind inn;the only positive is the location,straight on the beach,though one can't see the sunset from there;
a/c,fridge are loud;avoid paying more money for sea view, especially if located on the ground floor;room dark;pool quite small;restaurant had been closed,as management had quit;so there wasn't virtually any breakfast, except some coffee, juice and biscuits at the reception (this had been complimentary)
wouldn't stay here again
Good location, right on the beach. Free beach chairs. Free tennis. Bicycle rental available. Pool is small. Well kept grounds. Refrigerator and microwave in rooms. Restaurant was closed during our stay. Had a 'tiki' bar at the pool with short menu. It was nice and quiet during our stay, seemed less crowded than other parts of Sanibel and Captiva. Not your 'typical' Holiday Inn.
The rooms seem to have been 'remodeled' with paint....but was done quickly and not quality work. We did not see any 'black mold' in the bathroom, nor in the sink area. The carpet and tile were slightly 'worn' in our room. Housekeeping did a great job, and overall service was very good. The beds were comfortable. The air conditioner was louder that it should have been.
Overall not a bad place to spend a few days...very good for families with small children...would stay there again.
Traffic on Sanibel is very busy. Periwinkle (leaving the island) backed up from 2-6 pm every day we were there.(March 20-25, 2006) They are constructing a new bridge to the island, and it was nowhere near completion. The toll is now $6.00 to get onto the island.
We stayed here for three nights the first week in April. This is an extremely clean and well maintained hotel property (particularly for Florida standards). Agree with the last post, this is not your typical Holiday Inn, it simply carries the franchise tag. The pool area is appropriate size wise for this type of property. The pool bar was a nice amenity. The pool area only had 1 umbrella, it would have been nice to have a bit more shade area available. And while the free beach chairs were nice, there weren't any umbrellas available...the Florida sun can get awfully hot after awhile and the only option was to buy an umbrella in the hotel lobby. I have to agree with some of the others, the refrigerators while a nice touch were a bit loud. As far as the air conditioners, pretty much your typical hotel room variety, not extremely loud but annoying enough. The bed was comfortable and the furnishings typical hotel chairs and table in a rattan style. Despite being fairly busy, I can't say we either heard or were bothered by any other room noise. This is a good location, almost right in the middle of decent restaurants and shopping, but you will have to drive to get anywhere and if you're visiting during the busier spring season be prepared for the traffic. If you're coming to the area for a week, you should really consider a condo rental. I noticed quite a few larger families there for an extended stay and given the room rates couldn't understand why they would choose a hotel "room" when they could have had an entire condo for similar rates. The big question....is it worth close to $300/night during the high season? That's a tough one to answer. The property is ncie but all the same it was only a hotel room without a view. If you're visiting for a few days and you can get a good room rate, this is a good option. Sanibel isn't exactly cheap to begin with and there are limited nightly options on the island. I can see why others return here and we would do likewise for the right deal.
We took a weekend getaway to Sanibel and loved it! This hotel had surprisingly BEAUTIFUL grounds. Location was good. The rooms were darker, tile floors, semi-cheesy tropical theme. The bathroom was the only room that was a disapointment. It was TINY and the bathtub's glaze was peeling off. ALso the water pressure was non-existant and it would vary between very hot and cold. Not too comfortable.
All in all - we liked the hotel, and its location was good. We will return when we go back to Sanibel. :)
We used our Holiday Inn points to stay here while visiting family near Fort Myers. I was very pleaseantly surprised when we pulled into the brick drive and walked into the quaint lobby. Everything had a nice tropical feel to it. Our room was tiled and the colors were very Sanibel Island - corals, teals, creams...The amenities were a nice quality. To get to the beach we walked through a garden area, the pool and a nice grassy area with palm trees and hammocks. The hotel provided cushioned lounge chairs in the grassy area as well as on the beach. When standing on the beach and looking back at the hotel, you notice the plam trees. When looking at the big properties on either side you notice that they look like boxes. The hotel definately had better ambiance. When we checked in the concierge gave us a coupon for a free hour of bike riding. The only thing that was a drawback was that our room had a connecting door and in the room next to us we could very plainly hear the children. I think it was because the floor was tiled and not carpeted. We couldn't hear anything in the other room that didn't have a door. Fortunately the children were quiet later at night. Ask for a room without a connecting door.
My husband and I stayed there over the labor day holiday. This was our first time away from the kids in two years. We really enjoyed it. The room had a king size bed, a microwave and refrigerator, double sinks just outside the main bedroom. The bath itself was a little small, but no big deal for us. The a/c unit was a little loud, but I am also a light sleeper. The grounds were very pretty, lots of waterfalls and pretty landscaping. The hammocks and path to the beach you can't beat. The poolside bar was also great. Had lots of grass for kids to play if you bring the family. Also has ajoining rooms, great for families too. Overall, we would stay here again and bring the kids. The pool itself was a little small, but had lots of deck area for kids to roam if you bring them. Keep in mind that Sanibel closes early only a few places stay open past 9:00 p.m. It's truely a relaxing place. At this time of year the room rate was $159.20 and worth it for the stay. Enjoy! We did
