Sanibel in September 2010

by DogPerson

We are two adults with two dogs and are thinking of staying three or four nights on Sanibel after Labor Day in September. We are looking for a decent, clean but not luxurious, dog-friendly cottage on or very near a shelling beach. I am always looking for a good deal. Do any of you know of any specials currently available on Sanibel? Any suggestion on dog-friendly accomodiations?

Mitchell's Cottages or something like that.Went there several times with our dogs. Very nice simple Cottages, beautiful beach, great shelling. The beach is in a residental area. As I said that is where we went everytime except went to captiva one time. But love Mitchell's it was for sale though so hopefully if it sold they have kept it the same or made it better..

Thank you for your information. I have made reservations for an efficency cottage at a small resort that accepts dogs. It is very reasonable in price and one block from the beach. The name is PalmView. We will be staying four nights the last of September into October.

Travel Tips for Sanibel Island

White Sand

by Rhondaj

The sand gets hot during the day, so either have sandals at the ready, or dip your feet in the water before you dash across. It is sand of the sticky sort, doesn't go away easily. But finding white sand in your car long after your trip is over brings back fond memories!

coffee

by shohman

I asked the innkeeper where I could get good coffee on the island. She replied, "The Bean, everyone goes there...7-11 has real good coffee too." hmm, not encouraging :/
Still the bean is 'ok' it is a nice place to relax. The coffee was ok, I'm guessing a bit better than 7-11.

way off the beaten path....and off the island

Perfect for a day (or half) trip. Don't miss the Corkscrew Swamp Santuary, located outside Naples. (less than an hour from Sanibel depending on traffic.)

Walk quietly around a pristine swamp (on a boardwalk) and look out for alligators, turtles, many birds, and tons of lizards. These old growth cyprus trees are majestic, and even have their odd "knees" sticking out of the water.

It's a 2.25 mile walk around the swamp. You can go as fast or as slowly as you like, but I'd recommend being slow and very quiet. And, bring binoculars.

The entire experience there makes me want to take up birding.

Hang with the locals

by Aussie666 about Mucky Duck/Bubble Room/Green Flash

The Ducky's overrated and has set hours for lunch and dinner. It's usually packed with semi-permanent residents (a huge hord of wealthy, clicky old farts) from nearby South Seas Plantation resort (Captiva) that take over the place on most days. They do have a good home brew and service is fast.

The Bubble Room , also on Captiva is interesting with it's eclectic decor and overhead mini train which will give you a sore neck after a while. Get desert, you won't believe the size of pie you get!! The Green Flash (Captiva) has pretty good food and sits overlooking the intracoastal waters. Only flash I saw were cameras?
Plenty other eats to be had on Sanibel too, most all on Periwinkle, the main drag.

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum

by WanderingAimlessly

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum features exhibits of shells from around the world. The There is a learning lab for kids and very friendly, and knowledgeable, volunteers who guide people around the museum. Admission was only $6 for adults and $3 for kids (kids under 4 yrs old are free).
