RE: best Hotel

by HarrietCook

Just returned from staying at the Sundial Resort on Sanibel Island for a week. It is up and running and looks great. Pool, restaurants, bike and kayak rentals, has it's own beach. Would highly recommend it. The cost was actually less than some of the other places that were recommended. Don't know the Sanibel Inn.

Travel Tips for Sanibel Island

Seagrass Is Good!

by catalysta

'Wrack lines" are the tidal lines, where all kinds of animals gather to feed on the algae and beach debris, from tiny insects and crabs on up to the various shorebirds for which Sanibel is famous. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on these beaches as well - and no seagrass, no sea turtles!
For this reason, conservationists have seen to it for many years that the beaches of Sanibel & Ft. Myers are kept mostly in their natural and ungroomed state. The sea oats that flank the beaches help to stabilize the dunes during winter storms.

Diving and snorkeling

by Aussie666

The diving or snorkeling isn't that good because of the visibility due to weather conditions close in shore. Take your gear with you on your own boat and head north of Captiva or take a charter out with local operators or make the day trip to Key Largo and visit Pennencamp state park.

a bit of Buffalo on the beach

by ellielou about Schnapper's Hots

This small carry-out joint is run by three guys from Buffalo, and they sure know their burgers, hot dogs, sausages, and french fries.

Everything is made fresh; in fact, they have their amazing hot dogs made especially for them in Buffalo.

The half-pound burgers are tremendous. And, make sure you try the Weber's mustard. Honestly, while all the meat dishes are very, very good, the fries are great. They're hand cut, and fried to a golden brown. Perfection.

casual

by doug48 about the lazy flamingo

the lazy flamingo is a casual "key west" style restaurant and bar in sanibel. they specialize in local sea food and casual american fare. good food moderately priced. their shrimp dishes were quite good.

Sanibel Island Lighthouse

by WanderingAimlessly

This lighthouse was rather disappointing. It is just a metal framed tower with a light on top. You can't climb to the top or even park near it. We had to go down the road to a rather expensive parking area just to be able to get out of the car and take a better look at it. We enjoyed the fishing pier and beach behind the lighthouse more.
