The offshore islands of Florida's Gulf Coast are famous for their shelling. A long shallow shelf of soft sands with little or no surf makes for an ideal situation, where the shells of the Gulf & Caribbean can wash gently onshore without getting crushed in the process.
Add to this the varied salinity of different areas, some mixing with the local freshwater estuaries and some purely Gulf waters, with everything in between, and you have a perfect breeding ground for all manner of shellfish.
One caveat: it is HIGHLY illegal to remove live shellfish from their habitat, so please be very sure your shells are empty before collecting them.
