Sanibel/Captiva wedding
by muckyduck
My fiance and I are planning an october 2008 wedding in Captiva. We stayed at South Seas last March during our first stay on the islands and were blown away. We're thinking of going back there to have the ceremony. Any advice/opinion on weather in October? Groom's dinner options (captiva cruises, Green Flash, Key Lime Bistro?) We'd like for at least the wedding party to stay at South Seas but understand it might be a little too pricey for everyone. Any other recommendations for places that would be equally beautiful. We welcome any and all advice!!! Thanks.

Hi there. First, let me congratulate you and wish the best on your upcoming wedding.
Second, I will identify myself as an owner of a condo in Blind Pass Condominiums on Sanibel Island, a medium sized complex only a 5 minute drive from South Seas Plantation.
Given that disclosure, concerning the weather, we were just on Sanibel this past October, late in the month, and the weather was initially hot and humid. Then the humidity lifted and it was sunny, breezy and beautiful. It's just hard to call what it's going to be like in October. But you do have a good chance of hitting lucky and having gorgeous weather. The big difference between October and March is that you can swim in the Gulf in October: it's just too cold to do that in March.
Regarding alternatives to South Seas Plantation, Blind Pass Condominiums on Sanibel are not only the closest condos to the Plantation, they are the only condos in close proximity.
The complex itself is really lovely with beautiful and tropical landscaping, quite secluded, private and peaceful. They are not directly on the beach, but there are no streets to cross and the walk is short and pleasant with good nature viewing. There is a large pool at Blind Pass as well as tennis courts and free canoe and kayak use for the lagoon.
The units at Blind Pass are spacious with a split floor plan offering a good deal of privacy for couples with kids or couples sharing with another couple. The cost is most reasonable with 2 bedroom/2 bath units renting for $795-$895 and 3 bedroom/2 bath units a couple of hundred dollars more. The 2 bedroom units are restricted to 6 persons and the 3 bedroom units to 8 persons.
The trick at Blind Pass, unlike South Seas Plantation, is that every unit is individually owned, maintained, decorated and supplied. There are some gorgeous units and some just passable. You will have to do your homework in determining which units you want. One way you can do that is to go to the Blind Pass website, or you can call the rental office or you can contact me...either through this site or my own website: http://sanibelsyl.tripod.com/
I'll be happy to help if you would like further assistance.

Try Tween Waters for more reasonable accommadations. The food on Captiva is pretty lousey. You need to come onto Sanibel for better eats: Jacaranda, Traders, Schnappers, Lazy Flamingo, Over Easy are my recommendations.
Travel Tips for Sanibel Island
Day Trips
by janiac
Okay, so maybe I'm crazy, but I managed to visit Universal Studios Islands of Adventures and the Everglades in the three days we had in Sanibel.
We also visited the J Ding Wild life refuge that is on Sanibel, which has lots of birds and we did see one alligator as we drove through. It has a nice visitor center with things for kids to do.
We tried to take the evening boat ride that goes through the J. Ding area, but the tide was too low and we couldn't get out. Please check with the company when booking that you can get out, as we were not offered a full refund once it was determined that the boat could not get out. We had to pay $4 each for a small aquarium talk that they did beforehand, which we would not have otherwise done. Considering the time we spent on the boat trying to leave and the time in line to get our money back, I thought we should have been offered a full refund. Universal Studios/Orlando is about four hours away, so we left at 5:00 a.m., got there by 9:00 a.m., and were back by about 11:00 p.m. If you have kids who might get antsy on a long beach trip and don't mind a drive, I'd recommend Islands of Adventure (make sure to get there early and do Spiderman first!). My kids loved this park. For those less adventurous, Busch Gardens in Tampa is two hours away and is supposed to be great.
The Everglades (Everglades City) to be exact is about an hour away. We took an airboat ride, a boat ride (saw manatees!!!), and a so-called safari ride where we saw alligators. We also visited an alligator farm where the kids got to hold alligators.

NO LIVE SHELLING!!!
Collecting shells in Sanibel is great fun, and the place is famous for this activity. Live shelling is illegal, and you can be jailed and or fined $500.00 for rape and pillage of local wild life, and rightly so.
Enjoy collecting the dead shells, and throw the live ones back! There is no sport in snuffing out the species of anything, is there? Like they say in Sanibel, save the live ones for your grandchildren!
Good for a rainy day...

The Birth Of A Wildlife Refuge
by catalysta
He and his cohorts managed to make an arrangement with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to lease 2200 acres of mangrove wetlands longterm, forming the Sanibel Island National Wildlife Refuge. Upon his death in 1962, trustees of the conservation foundation that had been formed in his name move to solidify their tenuous grip on these precious wetlands. Finally in 1967, the lands were placed under federal ownership, and thus was formed the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
