Beach Tips
by vertov
Tourists go to Siesta Beaches, the locals go to Lido. You'll find Lido has ample parking and walking room when Siesta is packed full of people.
Avoid the wildlife, (see my other tip about the birds), walk in the water, enjoy the sand and sun!

Hop aboard one of the world's two largest airboats, the 'Myakka Maiden,' or the 'Gator Gal' for a scenic cruise on the Upper Myakka Lake. Discover what makes the Myakka unique among America's freshwater lakes. Hear intriguing stories about the alligator, anhinga, and sandhill crane as you become acquainted with the variety of creatures that make their home here.
These air-powered vessels venture into the shallow, grassy areas where traditional crafts of such size wouldn't dare to go. The leisurely ride is so safe and smooth you'll have no problem taking photographs.
Key West Style
by sarahjayn about Hemingway's
Hemingway's is right on St. Armand's Circle, about a five minute walk (or less) from the beach. They serve the typical beach fare - burgers, fish, etc. (Don't worry - there's some vegetarian options on the menu as well and a bar.) I like to take people here because it just feels very old school Florida. Plus, if you're lucky, one of the balconies will be available for you to sit out on. It's fun to sit up there and pass the time.
The service is really, really good. If you don't know what to do while in Sarasota, ask your server. They are all local-types.

Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary
by tampa_shawn
The pelican man’s bird sanctuary rehabs injured birds of all types.
The facility is quite large and has beautifully manicured grounds. Walking through the grounds is quite relaxing and I really enjoy watching all the different birds fom around the world.
The sanctuary sits on the other side of the Mote parking lot so be sure stop by when you visit Mote.
Sundays at the Sanctuary are often free and on other days you'll get a dollar off if you visited Mote Aquarium that day (keep your ticket stub).
If you visit on a day where admission is free - please make a donation - the money goes to support the rehab of our wild friends.
A favorite time to visit is during the baby bird season which runs from April to August. During this time the center cares for over 1,500 birds at the bird hospital.
There are educational programs available. The center is always looking for volunteers
