Suncoast Offshore: Grand Prix Festival
by sarahjayn
Personally, I really don't like this event, so for people like-minded to me, this is more of a warning than a tip. Every year, thousands of power boat profiteers and their fans come to Sarasota Bay for a combination golf tournament / boat race. The traffic in town becomes ultra-congested (which is terrible, because it's pretty bad normally), the stores are crowded, and the beach is always, always full - - bascially, there's no breathing room anywhere. Also, there's the noise. If you are on the keys you can here the roar of the engines from anywhere - including your $300 / night hotel room.
This event takes place the last week of June usually, so if no elbow room, noise, and a huge waste of fossil fuels is not your cup of tea, I'd avoid Sarasota all together then. However, if you have a desire to see shiny boats go really, really fast - charge on down!
The Best Quiche Ever & Pastries , too
by Mynameislori about La Fille du Boulanger
Real good real French food. The pastries are beautiful to look at and even better to eat. Open for breakfast and lunch, as well as dinner. Salmon quiche...it's just plain delicious...and so it the quiche legumiere...especially with a glass of bordeaux, followed by expresso and pastries. Breakfast/brunch/lunch is under $10, if I remember right, and dinner is more...A lot depends on what your order, how much excellent bordeaux you drink, and at what point you stop eating pastries.
Come face to face with Sea Turtles at the Mote!
by noidiotsplease
More than an attraction, the Mote Marine Aquarium is also a very important shark and sea turtle research center. Here, visitors can come face to face with injured sea turtles that are in various stages of recovery. In addition, the Mote features numerous aquariums including a fabulous jellyfish tank and a petting pool filled with many small marine creatures. The turtles are the big attraction however (see my travelogue). Don't forget to pickup a cool souvenir at the gift shop on your way out!
