Whilst driving around St Armand's Circle and the beach road the speed limit is about 15 or 20 mph and if a pedestrian steps out on the road you must politely give way. That took some getting used to.

Hi can anyone help please. We are looking to stay around the Sarasota area (or even a bit further down) of Florida and want to know which beach is gently shelving - ideal for kids and non-swimmers? Also which month would be the best out of May and November? We visited Sand Key near Clearwater last November and had lovely air temps but the sea was cold and grey looking.
Fort Myers Beach is one of the safest beaches around. You can walk out a long ways before the water even starts to get deep. From May thru October, tho, you will have to learn the stingray shuffle, as that is when stingrays are out and the last thing you'd want to do is step on one. This is a problem that just isn't on Fort Myers Beach, also.
You can walk out quite a bit on Lido Key in Sarasota. Do keep an eye for the stingrays as the other guy said. Check with the lifeguards where ever you end up beaching it for tides, currents and marine dangers.
Lido is the longest stretch of beach in Sarasota unless you consider the interesting possibility of walking down south Siesta to Casey Key - a very local thing to do but you should ask around first on just how exactly to do this.
With a family do the Lido thing and stay by the lifeguards so the kids will stay safe.
You will love Lido. Lot's of shells too. The water is a perfect emerald and there is very little surf or undertow except when the storms hit. There is also lot's of parking, even in the summer except on weekends and holidays.
enjoy
It's me, the "other guy", again. ;-)
There are no lifeguards on Ft. Myers Beach because the waters are so shallow, FWIW. You'd really have to go out a long ways (even a kid) to get out over your head.
I totally - LIDO KEY is wonderful. Very nice beaches, St. Armands square close by as well as nice restaurants in Longboat Key. Be sure to check out Ringling Museum and Mote Marina!!!
We just got back from the Sarasota area. Their best beach by far was Siesta Key. It is a public beach, so there are life guards and it was absolutely beautiful. Try looking at their web site www.siestakeychamber.com
Have a great trip!!
We had a fabulous time at Siesta Key beach in May. Lovely. It does get quite busy but, for us, people watching was part of the fun! Kids loved the sand and sea - saw loads of diving pelicans and dolphins twice.

The Hob Nob is open every day for breakfast and lunch. The best thing about this place is not the food - its the locals who love it (and come every, single day) and the atmosphere. The decor harkens back to the 1950s and the "dining area" is a series of outdoor picnic tables that are shaded by a metal awning. My ex-boyfriend used to get steak and eggs - runny - here. Yuck-City! He seemed to like them, though. I always got hashbrowns and a diet coke. The best thing to do, though, is to talk to the locals. They tell some great stories.
