I am thinking about joining an Earthwatch expedition in Mote. What is the place like (am from the UK, never been to this part of the States so I have no clue whatsoever) and does anyone know anything about what the Earthwatch trips are like?
I went on two Earthwatch expeditions in Kenya: the Black Rhinos last year and Tsavo's Lions this year, and they were both brilliant. What project is it that you are thinking of joining in Mote? the myakka river state park is located 15 miles east of sarasota on SR 72. the wild and scenic myakka river runs through this 58 square mile state park. the state park offers hiking, canoeing, camping. fishing and airboat tours. this is one of the most interesting state parks in southwest florida. for those interested in seeing alligators in the wild the myakka river has a huge alligator population.
This is a small converted gas station that's run by a bunch of fun ladies. The menu is standard deli fare, but it's a guaranteed good meal with friendly service.
A GREAT lunch place if you want to get away from the tourist crowd during season.
If you go, check out the teapots and salt/pepper shakers. My mother donated some of them from her ample garage sale finds. In honor of vegetarian tuesday, I had their "Bay Haven Burger" which was a very good regular deli burger. There is an excellent selection of sandwiches and the soups I'm told are always good. They'll do take out too.
This beach has fine, powdery, white sand, very soft for bare feet. Each time is a new experience....I usually walk at sunset, and have seen dophins in the surf a few times. Once in a great while there are sand dollars on the beach...and there are always pastel coquina shells.... it's like an artist's palette...all against a backdrop of the tropical colors of the sunset.
I just have to put one more picture in this review of the Selby gardens . For me the gardens were an education on what actually will grow in this area of Florida . the tropical plant life is amazing here.
located just a couple of blocks north of downtown sarasota is the van wezel performing arts hall. built in 1968 some consider this modernistic building an eye sore. however, the hall is the cultural center of sarasota. the van wezel hosts world class symphonies, both modern and classical dance companies, and broadway road shows. for those interested in music and dance this is a must do place to visit. check out their website for performances and dates.
