Sarasota summer
by wautcwap
Hello,
We are traveling to Sarasota this summer to do a pre retirement check. What kind of weather can we expect? Also, we are American/Europeans and would like to find a neighborhood which is open minded and liberal, is there one in Sarasota?
Thanks for your help.

Weather forecast (good all summer and into the fall): Partly cloudy, hot, and a slight chance of hurricanes ;-)
As for "open-minded and liberal", I can't speak to that...except note that most of the people living in expensive neighborhoods in Florida aren't from Florida, so I doubt that your retirement zones will be filled with members of the KKK...I guess it also depends on what you want them to be open-minded and liberal about...mixed race couple, who cares? gay couple, what's new? man/boy hedonists, yeah, you'll have a problem with that anywhere in the 50 States...

Weather will be hot most likely with afternoon showers.
Not sure about any liberal neighborhoods. If you have not already done so, I'd recommend checking out some of the city's statistics/demographics: www.city-data.com/city/Sarasota-Florida.html, http://realestate.aol.com/neighborhoods-Sarasota-FL/Sarasota/id-1264175, etc., etc. Google for additional sites.
Just a thought - you don't mention your ages (other than pre retirement) so a neighborhood with primarily seniors may not be so liberal. I do realize that may not always be the case, but I have lived in a couple of "senior" neighborhoods in on the west coast of FL. ;-)
Happy Searching!
Travel Tips for Sarasota
Watch the Sunset
by sarahjayn
My absolute favourite thing about Sarasota is the sunset on the beach. I know, that's totally corny, and I'm not usually a sunset-type, but . . . I dunno. My best memories are of sitting on the beach until everything goes dark.
I think part of the reason I like photography so much is it gives you a chance to really reflect on all the wonderful things that God does. I mean, when you're out walking around in the world, it's easy to miss them. My Sarasota sunset photographs are some of the most God-confirming ones that I have. Who else could make something so great? I was on the public beach at Longboat Key, where they have literally the best sand on earth, and I was just watching the coast line as the sun went down. These little girls were walking the shore with their mom and one of them kept swingling around like the sea grass. It was really nice to watch this little girl who was just so thrilled to be out in the world and dancing around.
Collect Seashells on Charlotte Beach
by vibi68
A common thing to do when you're on vacation at a coastal destination, is collecting seashells; Charlotte beach, in Charlotte county, close to Siesta Key is worth the detour if you enjoy that hobby. You'll find a variety of exquisite seashells most of them in perfect condition, after the tides rolled back out... in the morning. Make sure to arrive early, a lot of children and hobbyists are on the lookout for them also. It makes a great treasure hunt for children as well as relaxing time on the white sands for the parents.
Worth while Thai Food
by doolemma about The Bangkok Resturant
Lunches or dinners, if you like Thai food here is a great restuarant to try while in Sarasota. You will not be sorry. The place is very clean, the service is excellent, and it is easy on your wallet. We've tried many things on the menu and I favor the Seafood Ladnar. It is the pictured dish in the long plate. Shrimp, scallops, and Squid over the usual mixure of vegatables. The other dish pictured is a stir-fried Pad Prik Prao.
Off to visit an orchard...mmmm, fresh juice!
by Bunsch
Mixon's Fruit Farms is a wonderful place to visit, especially if you are a city person from a northern country where oranges, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits cannot be picked in your backyard. There is a tram which will take you for a jaunt through the trees, but my favorite part of the experience comes when you're invited to drink your fill of freshly-squeezed juices. Mixon's also makes a wonderful sorbet with their oranges which is delightful on a hot day. There is, frankly, a lot of junk mixed in with the good stuff in the store. Limit yourself to the variety of freshly-made things (all of which are available for tasting), send home a bushel or two of fruit, have a superb salad in the snack bar, and be sure to send a postcard to everyone freezing back home in the snow!

Ca d'Zan -winter residence was designed by New York architect Dwight James Baum in 1924.In the ball room the ceiling is made of painings in octagon frames. Those are pictures of all nations of the World dancing!
