Days out from Bradenton / Sarasota

by Mike57

Hi

Any good ideas for great days out from Bradenton to make a break from the beach?

Anything up to 150 miles radius would be a great help!

Thanks for your help

Mike

great place to eat is phillipi creek sea food, (sarasota) and for the younger folk is anna maria island's beach house. (anyone for lunch) st. armands circle is good to shop in the sarasota area. keep alert for Jerry springer sightings, as he does have a house on bird key. also selby gardens are great. venice beach for collecting sharks teeth, espically with all the storms they are having this year. we have found pre-historic sharks teeth, and tons of sea glass. sanibelle island is good, and has some great craft and art shows when the clime starts to cool. you did not say when you plan to go. sanibelle is also great for shelling. The Edison house and the Henry ford museum are also one of my favorite destinations. they are also in the Ft Meyers area. st. pete has a good beach called pass-a-grill, and there is a good restaurant right on the beach for lunch. dinner is great at the hurricane, and you can go up 4 floors to the roof top to eat. they do have an elevator. st. johns pass in st. pete is also good. also fort de soto is a great public park. if you do not mind the drive. st. augustine is wonderful, and the space center is reasonably close. avoid the rat park unless you have small children. it is really only for the little ones. we have been to florida, into this area about 35 times, so if you want more specific info, let me know.

I'm a little confused . . . are you trying to get away from the beach? If so, why? I used to live in Sarasota / Bradenton, but not on the beach. I was always jealous of near-beach-types.
Anyhoodles, if you are, you might want to check out Tampa. (Yes, Tampa.) It's more interesting than it seems. I have a Tampa and Ybor City page you might find slightly useful, though other people's are probably better.

My family visited Sarasota, Florida in February, and had the most awesome experience kayaking with Almost Heaven Kayak Adventures on the South Lido Mangroves Tunnel tour. Even though we are all beginners, our tour guide gave us great paddling instructions and was very helpful in calming our nerves. He was also very knowledgeable about the local habitat and Florida eco system. So much so that my two teenagers and five year old are still talking about the experience. We highly recommend Almost Heaven Kayak Adventures (www.kayakfl.com). It was a must for anyone staying in the Sarasota/Bradenton area.

Travel Tips for Sarasota

Tip the Sky Cap or carry it yourself!

by sarahjayn

I worked at the airport for a long time, and I was always totally amazed at how many people did not tip the sky caps (the people that carry your luggage from your rental car to check in or vice-versa). At first, I just thought they were being rude. I mean, Florida is a "Right to Work" State, so these guys generally (depending on the airline that "books" them) get paid under minimum wage. All their earnings are tips. However, a sky cap once told me that in other parts of the world tipping like that isn't done, and considered a little rude because they are paid well.
Well, not in Sarasota, people! So, if you're getting your bags carried, please tip at least a dollar a large suitcase. It's the nice thing to do. It's not rude - its how they earn their living!

Warm Mineral Springs (now,...

by Tolik

Warm Mineral Springs (now, Golden Springs) is the only spa resort in Florida.
Water of rare quality attracts health-seekers to 2.5-acre lake. The lake, which maintains a year –round temperature of 87 degrees, has soothing and, some believe, healing powers.

gourmet

by doug48 about euphemia haye

located on the north end of longboat key euphemia haye is about a 20 minute drive from lido key in sarasota. this gourmet restaurant and bar is one of the best restaurants in florida. they specialize in local seafood, steak, and gourmet american fare. on the second floor of euphemia haye is a lounge and dessert room that offers live entertainment. for those interested in fine dinning the euphania haye is a must stop in the sarasota area. reservations recommended.

The House of John a.k.a. C' d'Zan

by sarahjayn

This house was the winter home to John and Mabel Ringling. Built in the 1920s, it was recently restored and opened to the public. Mrs. Ringling was very active in the design and patterned it after her favorite Venetian hotels (hence the Venetian name, C' d'Zan). The house is mega-impressive and full of history and art. Also, the view from the back of the house onto the bay is unforgettable.
The public is not allowed to roam freely through the house, though. You must be part of a very long guided tour. In my opinion, this is not a suitable activity for children.

tibbal learning center

by doug48

the tibbal learning center is home to howard tibbal's miniture circus. these miniture circus artifacts took over 50 years to build. along with the miniture circus is an interesting collection of period circus posters.
