Travel Tips for Siesta Key

Look for birds

by zrim

The mangroves on the east side of the key are home to many varieties of birds. This friendly looking fellow is a night heron. As far as I can tell he hunts relentlessly throughout both the day and the night. Always looking for a tasty crustacian to snack upon.

Lots and lots of gulls

by zrim

Many different species of gulls along the Florida coasts. Can be a nuisance, but if you stop to take a closer look, the gull can be a pretty bird. This type is the royal tern. It lives in colonies that can number 10,000. When I was a kid, I'd take scraps of stale bread down to the beach and feed the seagulls. They'd flock around in great numbers. I always took pity on the meeker birds who stayed towards the fringes and tried to throw chunks of bread their direction. But usually that would only cause them to get beat up by the larger gulls.

The City of Sarasota

by HotSpotJ

One very cool thing about staying on Siesta Key is that you are only a short drive from downtown Sarasota, a city that in itself has a number of things to do and to see. From the soothing beach to the historic downtown of Sarasota, so much to do and see.... thats what I call a vacation!

Siesta Key

by Gillybob

Siesta Key has some of the brightest, whitest sand you will experience. Don't visit here without your sunglasses!

I was very lucky to be taken here by Ann (TheTravelSlut) during my visit. The beach is very white and the sun very bright - I have a photo just prior to this one without my sunglasses - my eyes are not open!

Welcome to Siesta Key

"If you love beautiful Beaches, this place has it!"

Siesta Key is a small barrier island off of Sarasota is only 2.3 square miles on the Gulf Coast of Florida. This is a wonderful place to go to the beach! Rated one of the best beaches in Florida and America by the Travel Channel, so you know it's gotta be good. Well it is, the sand is perfect white cool and soft. Great shopping here in little shops at Siesta Village.
