Ben's Hitching Post campgrounds: Ben's place

The owners provide up to 50 sites for RV or tent in the grass (field) under limited shade with gravel roads. Sites include electric and phone hookups with water accessible to every 10 sites.
There are restrooms with showers and flush toilets. They have a recreation room and swimming pool. Laundry and dump station available for campers convenience.

It is privately owned and not KOA but not bad choice for a couple of nights (they do allow pets but only with pre-registration).
Prices in the $25 per night range depending on your hookup.

Sun Plaza: Go anywhere else but here

Sun Plaza, 5461 East Silver Springs Boulevard, "gateway to the springs", right across from the state park, fine accomodations for reasonable least that was what the AAA advertisement had said (they have removed the motel from their list after we complained).
Maybe at one time the advertisement may have been correct but by the time we got there (May 2003) it had new owners and definitely a welfare agenda. The room had flood-damaged furniture (definite water line on everything about 6-inches from the floor), fleas, spiders, mildew up the shower wall, damaged lock (only the chain kept the door secure), urine smell, one towel (with dark stains), only one of the three room lamps worked, coffee and doughnuts for the continental breakfast.
We had ordered the room via AAA ahead of time because we knew we would arrive in Silver Springs very late at night (and very tired from driving). We checked in, went down the road for late dinner and got back to the motel about 10pm. When we opened the door and smelt the room we went to the desk and asked for another and were told the motel was full. Reluctantly we stayed the night. We complained to the office again the next morning with the same results so we cancelled the rest of our reservation there. We found a very nice Comfort Inn in Ocala and stayed our three days there instead. When we got back home we immediately went to the AAA office and documented our complaint with pictures. It took them almost a full year to get that motel off their lists.

great waste of money
