Travel Tips for Tallahassee

Basically this is a Campus...

by pulgaron

Basically this is a Campus town, and a political(The Capitol)town. No one just drives by, and drops into Tally, just to see what's there, you have to make an effort to go to Tally. It is out of the way, and away from touristy places. Most people have a reason, such as go to school there, or visit the Governor, etc. My interest is I have a petit fille that is a Seminole.

A great little deli in eastern Leon County

by pchamlis

If you find yourself exploring out in eastern Leon County, somewhere in the MIccosukee-Lloyd-Monticello areas, there's a little gem of a country store and deli that you should try. It's call the Hilltop Country Store and Deli, and it's quite a find. They have wonderful deli sandwiches, as well as terrific barbecue and hamburgers. Fried chicken, too. All good.

If you call ahead, they'll have your sandwiches ready to go.

The Hilltop also has a lot of nifty local delicacies. One of my favorites are the amaretto chocolate dipped pecans, that come from nearby Monticello, Florida. I've shared these with friends far and wide to great acclaim. Guys, these are good enough to give to a woman you love, if you know what I mean. : )

Hilltop's official address is 14807 Mahan Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32309

Their phone number is 850.906.0752

FINDING HILLTOP....
(from Miccosukee) Drive south on Veterans Memorial Drive (County Rd 59). When the road dead-ends at US90 East (Mahan Drive), turn left. Drive about 2 miles and Hilltop will be on the right... not surprisingly at the top of a hill. :)

FROM TALLAHASSEE
Drive east towards Monticello on US90 (Mahan Drive). Drive past Cap Circle, and the Interstate highway 10 on ramp. About 10 miles beyond the interstate intersection, you'll see Hilltop on the right.

Mmmmmmmm Mexican food

by pchamlis about Morelia's Fine Mexican Dining

Located in one of the area's nicer "strip malls", Morelia's Fine Mexican Dining is a well-run local establishment. They serve up a pleasing array of Mexican standbys and combo platters, along with an excellent selection of cold Mexican, other import and domestic beer. They also have a limited winelist, although I'm seldom thinking in terms of wine when I'm eating Mexican food.

The service is always prompt and attentive. As with most Mexican restaurants, you always get a lot of food for your $$$. I like all types of Mexican foods. Morelia's has excellent fajitas, and they seem to do a nice job with bisteca items, including their Mexican-style grilled t-bone steak.

Combo platters are always a good choice, too.

Don't miss the flan or fried ice cream at dessert.

The Springtime Tallahassee Festival

by pchamlis

Tallahassee likes to call itself the city "where springtime begins." Each spring, there is a huge festival which includes street markets, balloon rallies and a tumultuous parade marking the end of winter and the beginning of a fragrant and lovely spring.

Anyone who visits Tallahassee in the springtime needs to find a reason to be in town during "Springtime Tallahassee".

Tallahassee's Roller Derby Queen(s)

by pchamlis

This travelogue is homage to the spectacle that is roller derby; a series of photos and commentary. As a musical inspiration and interlude, we will include the words from Jim Croce's classic "ROLLER DERBY QUEEN" (in capital letters) along the way.

In our first photo, we see two of Tallahassee's Roller Derby Queens....The lady in the middle is Fem Venomous and the one on the left with "KO" on her arm is the flashy Moxie Knockout.

.............. I FELL IN LOVE WITH A ROLLER DERBY QUEEN
................. MEANEST HUNK O' WOMAN THAT ANYBODY EVER SEEN.
..................... DOWN IN THE ARENA

You always remember your first time, there are many things to which that comment applies. In the case of roller derby, they mark you with a scarlet letter if/when they learn you're a first-timer. Here we have a clearly denoted "roller derby virgin" as they call them.

.............................GONNA TELL YOU A STORY THAT YOU WON'T BELIEVE
........................BUT I FELL IN LOVE LAST FRIDAY EVENING
....................WITH A GIRL I SAW ON A BARROOM TV SCREEN.

.....................I WAS JUST GETTIN' READY TO GET MY HAT
.........................WHEN SHE CAUGHT MY EYE AND I PUT IT BACK
.............................AND I ORDERED MYSELF A COUPLE MORE SHOTS
....................................AND BEERS.

It's all a friendly and inclusive party. Just DO remember that when you pose for pictures - even if it seems like a good idea at the time - eventually someone is going to see them.

.....FIVE FOOT SIX AND 215
...........A BLEACHED BLONDE BOMBER WITH A STREAK OF MEAN
..................SHE KNEW HOW TO KNUCKLE
........................SHE KNEW HOW TO SCUFFLE AND FIGHT.

Somebody has to keep control, and that's the job of the volunteer officials. As you can see, they're a wild bunch themselves. Actually, maybe they need someone else to keep the officials under control.

...........ROUND AND ROUND
..................ROUND AND ROUND
..........................ROUND AND ROUND
..................................DOWN IN THE ARENA

One of the younger fans in attendance at the recent Tallahassee Capital Punishment vs Brevard County/Daytona Beach Molly Rogers match. The kid has a pretty good spider-man vibe going on.

The local "A" team (Capital Punishment) is pretty good, and well ranked in the state. As you can see here, they were rapidly pulling away from the under-womanned team from Daytona/Brevard County.

..............WELL I COULD NOT HELP BUT TO FALL IN LOVE
................WITH THIS HEAVY DUTY WOMAN I BEEN SPEAKIN' OF
....................THINGS LOOKED KIND OF BAD UNTIL
........................THE DAY SHE SKATED INTO MY LIFE

Imagine all of this happening at a high rate of speed. Add in some loud garage-band rock and roll music and then have several beers. Roller Derby.

.........WELL, SHE MIGHT BE NASTY
............SHE MIGHT BE FAT
.................BUT I NEVER MET A PERSON WHO WOULD TELL HER THAT
...............SHE'S MY BLEACH BLONDE BOMBER
.............MY HEAVY-HANDED HACKENSACK MAMA

Everybody and everything working the roller derby match/show has a name, a stage name and perhaps goes by other names. Everyone is someone else, and it's all fun.

......HER NAME MAY BE "TUFFY"
........BUT ALL HER FRIENDS CALL HER SPIKE.
