Travel Tips for Tallahassee

You would have to go see the...

by DeputyJ

You would have to go see the Museum of Florida History. It shows things and events from back in pre civil war. I missed the Florida State football games. Doak Campbell stadium has really changed in the last 15 years, the most recent change has been the stadium and parking lot themselves.

High School Football....madness on a smaller scale

by pchamlis

Football is truly king in Tallahassee. I've already made a tip about the nationally-renowned Florida State University football team.

But, dealing with FSU will be an all day affair, and it isn't cheap. If you just love sports, and especially American football, consider attending one of the local high school games on a fall Friday or Thursday night. You can enjoy a great event, have yourself a burger and a coke, and do it all for under US$10.

If you'd like to partake, just check the local newspapers for scheduled games, or call any local high school for information.

And besides all the fun you'll have, you're supporting young people as they engage in a worthwhile endeavor. Just bring a seat cushion. Some of the high school stadium seats are splinter-filled.

Student art exhibitions at Florida State

by pchamlis

Florida State University has a very strong fine arts program. There are always opportunities in Tallahassee to enjoy the fruits of students' academic pursuit, be it by attending a concert, a play or an art exhibition.

The local newspaper, the Tallahassee Democrat, does an excellent job of keeping the public informed about such happenings on almost a daily basis. (Confidentially, it's one of the few things the Democrat does well) When you're in town, find some of these (usually free) offerings that suit your taste and check 'em out.

The accompanying photo shows my wife (Bonnie) and daughter (Sara), along with VT member Juliana (Vela Candela). We attended an exhibition recently featuring Juliana's photos. Juliana is pursuing her Ph.D. in fine arts at Florida State.

Alfred B. Maclay State Gardens

by JudyinPA

This is a wonderful State Park within the boundries of Tallahassee. Miles of hiking and biking trails. These multi-use trails are hilly and not the usual flat trails in most of the state. Watch for horses and bikers. There is also a great garden area surrounding the original home ot the Maclay family. The house and surrounding land were donated to the state by this family. There are two admission charges to the park. One is to enter just the trail area and lakes and the other is for the gardens and to visit the home which is now a museum. You have a choice to do one or both.

Downtown Tallahassee

by karenincalifornia

Downtown Tallahassee is also old town Tallahassee. Tallahassee isn't one of those cities where the new business area was built in some place outside the original old town area. Today, downtown is a combination of modern and historic old buildings.

Downtown Tallahassee was restored and redeveloped recently and is exceptionally charming. Some of the historic buildings reminded me of the buildings on Bourbon Street in New Orleans with their second story decks that run along the width of the building. After all, this is the South, and I had plenty of reminders of that during my stay in Tallahassee.

The immediate downtown area does not have many restaurants and shops. Being the center of state government, there is an abundance of law offices. A lunch reservation at a downtown restaurant might be tough to get at the last minute, but you should have no trouble finding someone to draw up your will.
